Financial Aid Overview

Mission Statement

The Financial Aid Office exists to serve students by reducing the financial barriers to educational goals. We accomplish this through:

  • Identifying and coordinating available financial resources
  • Collecting, organizing and processing financial data
  • Supporting the college's Foundation in the administration of scholarships for students
  • Educating students about our financial aid process

Priority Deadlines for Fall 2014:

Pell Grant and State Grants: Friday, August 1, 2014

Direct Loans: Friday, August 8, 2014

Priority Deadlines mean that if all required documentation is received in the Financial Aid Office by Close of Business on those days (in this case, 5:00pm on both days), the student will be exempt from the purge of classes on August 9th.  If it is later discovered that the student still requires additional documentation in order to complete his/her file, the student must provide that information in a timely manner in order to receive his/her financial aid.

If a student's financial aid eligibility has not been determined before the start of the semester, the student will need to be prepared to pay for tuition, fees, and books out of pocket or will need to set up a tuition payment plan.  Once eligibility has been determined, the student will be reimbursed the amount of financial aid for which he/she is eligible minus any funds due to the College.

Financial Aid Disbursement Schedule

***IMPORTANT: The first anticipated disbursement date for all students for the Fall 2014 semester is October 10, 2014.  NEW FOR 2014-15:  All Federal Direct Student Loans will be awarded in two disbursements PER SEMESTER.  Most students will receive the first disbursement October 10th and the second disbursement November 21st.***

Bookstore Changes and Financial Aid

Students using financial aid will now be able to place online orders for their textbooks instead of having to come into the campus Bookstore. Online ordering will be available to students using financial aid according to the schedule identified by the Bookstore.  Online orders are for textbooks only, and they can be picked up in the Bookstore.

Other services will include:

  • More specialized check-out lines dedicated to decrease wait times.
  • The Bookstore will be offering laptop computers for sale at a discounted rate.
  • A Financial Aid representative will be in the store to help with any financial aid questions/issues.

Changes to Financial Aid Laws

Finishing your diploma or degree on time just became more important than ever.  A new federal law shortens the length of time students will be eligible for Pell Grants from 18 semesters to 12, beginning with the 2012-13 school year.  This is retroactive so they will count previous years you were awarded Pell Grant money.  For more information, contact the Financial Aid Office at financialaidoffice@abtech.edu or come see us in the K. Higher One and the A-B Tech Access Card

Please remember to activate your Higher One account and set up your refund preference as soon as possible at http://abtechaccesscard.com

You will be given four options to receive your disbursement when activating your Higher One account:

Option

Disbursement Period

1.  *EasyRefund to OneAccount

Same day via direct deposit

2.  Direct deposit to another financial institution

2 to 3 business days via direct deposit

3.  Printed paper check

7 to 10 business days (or more) via U.S. Postal Service

4.  **Not selecting option 1, 2, or 3

Paper check will be mailed no earlier than 21 days after the refund is disbursed via U.S Postal Service.

Important Notes:

*The "EasyRefund" option requires students to open an OneAccount at Higher One.  As with opening any bank account, carefully read the agreement terms and fees.

**Students who do not select option 1, 2, or 3 to receive their disbursement will be mailed a paper check no earlier than 21 days after the refund is disbursed via U.S. Postal Service.
