Tests Prep for HiSET® or GED®

Beware the GED® test is not online

Prepare for the HiSET® or the GED® test with the help of instructors

Our classroom instruction is based on best practices in adult education and we target our lessons to help students develop the skills and knowledge they will need to pass a high school equivalency exam. It's okay if you have been out of school for a long time. We work with students at all levels in reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science.

Step 1:  Sign Up for an Orientation/Registration Session

(Note: Students who are 16 or 17 years old must have a completed Minor Permission Form submitted prior to Orientation/Registration. Scroll down for more info.)

Call (828) 398-7433 to sign up for one of our upcoming registration sessions. If you are interested in attending our Madison Campus registration, please call (828) 398-7700 to reserve a space. Orientation/Registration sessions are held about every two months, one or two weeks before each class session. Continuously enrolled students can pre-register for the next class session without repeating an Orientation/Registration session.

Step 2:  Attend an Orientation/Registration Session (5 hours)

You will receive important information about the HiSET® and GED® tests and about our test preparation program, including class schedules, attendance requirements and support services. You will also take a placement test, called a TABE, in math and language arts. Your test scores will help us place you in the appropriate class level and tailor our instruction to meet your individual needs. Before you leave, you will meet with someone to assist you with your class schedule for the following eight weeks.

Step 3:  Schedule Your Test

HiSET® is now available as a high school equivalency exam option at A-B Tech.  HiSET® is a paper and pencil test and the High School Equivalency (HSE) program classes will prepare students for this exam.

For students interested in the GED® test, visit to register for a testing session. There is a per-test fee of $20. You can pay GED® online using a credit card or pay with cash, credit or debit card at the A-B Tech cashier window in the Ferguson Center for Allied Health and  Workforce Development Building at 30 Genevieve Circle, Asheville, NC  28801.

If you have been studying for the high school equivalency tests through A-B Tech's HSE program, you may be eligible for financial assistance with the HiSET® and GED® test fees and with curriculum programs at A-B Tech. Ask your instructors for more information.

Students who are 16 or 17 years of age must fill out a minor permission form before orientation. Minor Permission Forms can be picked up in the Hemlock Building at 207 Victoria Road, Asheville, NC  28801, Rooms 304 or 305, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
