Students have the following Placement Options (students may use different options for math and English placement):
Option 1 – Transfer Credit (Submit Official Transcripts)
Students with college-level math and/or English courses with a grade of “C” or higher from a regionally accredited institution may be eligible for transfer credit. An official transcript from the college at which the course was completed is required. Students who have completed an AP Exam in math or English with a score of 3 or higher may also qualify for placement credit. Transcripts or AP Scores should be sent to: Records and Registration, A-B Tech Community College, 340 Victoria Rd, Asheville, NC 28801. Please allow two weeks for A-B Tech to receive and process a transcript mailed from another school. Approved transfer credit will be posted to a student’s account and can be viewed in an unofficial transcript in Self-Service.
Option 2 – High School Placement
Effective Fall 2016, students who have graduated from high school within the last five years may be eligible to place into college-level English and math based on the high school transcript. To qualify, students must
- Have an unweighted GPA of 2.6 or higher AND
- Have completed a fourth-level math course beyond Algebra II. Fourth-level math courses include, but are not limited to: Discrete Math, Calculus, Pre-Calculus, Statistics, Advanced Functions & Modeling, and Integrated Math IV.
- Current high school seniors must be enrolled in the required math and have mid-year grades posted to be considered for this placement option.
Please note that students who qualify for this placement option and have an unweighted GPA between 2.60 and 2.99 will be required to take supplemental labs with their college-level math and English courses.
An official high school transcript must be submitted. Transcripts should be sent to: Admissions, A-B Tech Community College, 340 Victoria Road, Asheville, NC 28801.
Option 3 – Submit College-Level Scores From an Approved Placement Test
Students may submit official scores from an approved placement test.
Option 4 – Take the NC-DAP Placement Test
Students who are not eligible for math and/or English placement using one of the first three options must complete the NC-DAP placement assessment, which is available at A-B Tech on a daily basis, except Sundays and College holidays. The assessment is computer-based and must be completed in person. Students may complete the assessment in a single session but are encouraged to take the math and English portions on different days. The NC-DAP is the only placement option A-B Tech may use to determine developmental-level course placement.
Students may also take the NC-DAP at another college. For more information about taking the NC-DAP at another college, please contact Distance Advising at email@example.com.
If you need accommodations for testing, please contact Support Services at (828) 398-7581 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Please allow at least two weeks to make arrangements for accommodations.
NC-DAP scores are valid for five years.
