Alternative Spring Break:
Explore the Rich Culture of Asheville's Sister City of Valladolid, Mexico

This Trip is Intended For: Students, faculty, staff and community members.

Travel Dates: March 19-26, 2018

Application Deadline: December, 15 2017

Trip Summary: Try something different from the resorts of Mexico and come with us for an alternative Spring Break to Asheville’s Sister City of Valladolid. You will love this safe, friendly, walkable, and culturally rich city. Day trips include visiting archeological sites, sampling local Yucatecan cuisine, learning about the Mayan culture, touring restored haciendas, sitting in on a local school, delving into local art, snorkeling, and meeting local friends.

Costs: $2200

Program Fee Includes: International airfare from CLT, transportation, accommodations (with wifi), travel insurance, program fee. All group outings and most meals are included.

What Isn't Included: Checked luggage and personal/incidentals.

History of Psychology in Europe

This Trip is Intended For: A-B Tech students as well as students from other colleges.

Travel Dates: May 15-24, 2018

Application Deadline: December 15, 2017

Trip Summary: Explore the origins of Psychology in Europe and investigate the sensational role that Freud played in the late 19th century. An Austrian native and graduate of the esteemed University of Vienna, Freud's groundbreaking ideas around psychoanalysis were most influential in London. A short stroll through Freud's home reveals how he and the likes of Carl Jung changed the face of the doctor-patient relationship.

Costs: $4200

Program Fee Includes: International airfare, travel insurance, accommodations, psychology-focused lectures, On-Tour transportation, light breakfast daily, 3 local dinners with regional cuisine, full-time tour director, expert local guides, guided sightseeing, entrance fees per itinerary.

Study Spanish in Coruña and Hike El Camino in Spain

This Trip is Intended For: Students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Travel Dates: June 3-18, 2018 (two weeks) or June 3-July 2, 2018 (four weeks)

Application Deadline: December 15, 2017

Trip Summary: Select from different options: to study at an intensive Spanish program in beautiful Coruña, a northwestern coastal city in Spain; and/or walking the world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site Camino de Santiago- the English Way- from Ferrol in northwestern Spain to Santiago do Compostela. Combine both options or just do one- enjoy homestays with a Spanish host family if at the language school. The Camino de Santiago trip will be a guided-walking tour and include accommodations.

Costs: will depend on which option you select

Program Fee Includes: International airfare, all transportation in country, classes in language school (Monday through Friday, 20 hours per week), accommodations in a host family, travel insurance, daily planned activities, weekend-day excursions, 3 meals per day, and laundry service.

Scottish Community, Culture and History

This Trip is Intended For: Students, faculty, staff and community members.

Travel Dates: June 6-16, 2018

Application Deadline: December 15, 2017

Trip Summary: Join us as we visit Asheville’s newest Sister City of Dunkeld/Birnam, Scotland. Located about an hour north of Edinburgh, these small picturesque villages boast an active River Tay, endless hiking opportunities, a love for Scottish culture and history, local cuisine, and generous people. We will also spend time in Edinburgh and traverse other areas of Scotland (per participant input).

Costs: $4000

Cultural Immersion in Ecuador

Trip Intended For: Students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Travel Dates: July 16-25, 2018

Application Deadline: December 15, 2017

Trip Summary: The excursion will begin in Guayaquil and include a tour and a visit to a cocoa plantation and an orchid nursery in the Andes. Then participants will explore scenic river valleys and an Amazon adventure, meeting a local Quechua family to learn about their way of life. The tour ends in Quito, the capital of Ecuador.

Costs: $4000

Program Fee Includes: International airfare from Charlotte, transportation, accommodations, 20 meals (9 breakfasts, 6 lunches, 5 dinners), excursions, gratuities, and travel insurance.

Art of Rome and Florence in 2019

Trip Intended For: A-B Tech students, as well as students from other colleges and community members.

Travel Dates: Save now for May 2019!!

Application Deadline: December 15, 2018

Trip Summary: The Rome & Florence trip is an opportunity for art enthusiasts and history buffs to travel to two of Italy’s most important cultural destinations.  Rome - once the heart of the ancient world and now the capital of Italy – a city filled with Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque masterworks.  The visit to Rome will include two sightseeing tours - one of Vatican City, home of the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica and other of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.  The second city Florence – the cradle of the Renaissance will include a visit to the famous Florence Duomo, the Academia – home of Michelangelo’s David and a sightseeing tour of this beautiful, walkable city. 

Costs: $3500-3800

Important Scholarship Information:
 

Students interested in studying in Spain should consider applying for the Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship. The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. It aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in education abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. The program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs. How to participate:

  1. Participants must be current A-B Tech students to register for the course aligned with the trip. To become a student at A-B Tech, go to www.abtech.edu and apply! The course can be taken for curriculum credit or audited (no grade).
  2. A non-refundable deposit must be made using the proper forms through each Trip Leader. The balance can be made in monthly payments; amounts depend on each trip cost and departure date. Contact the Trip Leader for specific payment information.
  3. Pre-departure meetings will be scheduled and participants are required to attend at least one.
  4. Forms: Before departure, students must sign the Study Abroad Program Release Form, thereby agreeing to abide by the Code of Student Conduct and waiving all claims against A-B Tech for injury or loss sustained during the Study Abroad Program. An Emergency Contact form will also be required of all participants, and the Trip Leader will collect forms a month before departure. Participants will also be required to have health and accident insurance valid in and outside of the United States during the entire period of participation.
