History of Psychology in Europe

This trip is intended for: A-B Tech students as well as students from other colleges.

Tentative travel dates: May 15-24, 2019

Application deadline: December 15, 2018

Trip summary: Explore the origins of Psychology in Europe and investigate the sensational role that Freud played in the late 19th century. An Austrian native and graduate of the esteemed University of Vienna, Freud's groundbreaking ideas around psychoanalysis were most influential in London. A short stroll through Freud's home reveals how he and the likes of Carl Jung changed the face of the doctor-patient relationship.

Art of Rome and Florence

This trip is intended for: A-B Tech students as well as students from other colleges, and community members

Travel dates: May 15-22, 2019 (may vary by a day or two on either side)

Trip summary: The Rome & Florence trip is an opportunity for art enthusiasts and history buffs to travel to two of Italy’s most important cultural destinations.  Rome - once the heart of the ancient world and now the capital of Italy – a city filled with Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque masterworks.  The visit to Rome will include two sightseeing tours - one of Vatican City, home of the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica and other of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.  The second city Florence – the cradle of the Renaissance will include a visit to the famous Florence Duomo, the Academia – home of Michelangelo’s David and a sightseeing tour of this beautiful, walkable city. 

Costs: $3800-4000

DDay 75: Amsterdam, Normandy & London

This trip is intended for: students, faculty, staff, community members

Tentative travel dates: June 1-9, 2019

Application deadline: December 15, 2018

Trip summary: This three-country tour provides an in-depth look at the effects of war across the Western Front. See what life was like for persecuted Jews at the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. Walk the hallowed beaches of Dunkirk and Normandy, we will participate in a special event at the official D-Day 75th anniversary commemoration. Tour the expansive Imperial War Museum in London, and visit key WWI and WWII sites along the way.

Costs: $4000-4300 (payment plans available)

Spanish and Biology in Ecuador

This trip is intended for: A-B Tech students as well as students from other colleges.

Tentative travel dates: June 16-July 15, 2019

Application deadline: December 15, 2018

Trip summary: Spend a month in beautiful and safe Ecuador with A-B Tech faculty members Kristen Schlaefer (Spanish) and Scott Paxon (Environmental Biology). This cultural immersion program will take place in three different cities and includes daily Spanish courses (M-F), an opportunity to live with Spanish-speaking families in each city, and visits to areas of cultural and ecological importance on the afternoons and weekends.

Costs: $3500

French language and culture in Montreal, Canada

This trip is intended for: Students and community members

Tentative travel dates: June-July 2019

Application deadline: December 15, 2018

Trip summary: Study the French language for a month in lovely and culturally-rich Montreal, Canada. Students and community members will stay with a local family (homestay) and take French language classes from 9am-1pm daily for a month. There will be afternoon cultural activities and opportunities to apply the French language. The emphasis will be on learning French for everyday and academic communication. Class outings will allow students to use what they learn in class with locals.

Costs: $3500

Ireland Summer Camp for high school students (age 17+)

This trip is intended for: A-B Tech high school students that will turn 17 years old in 2019.

Tentative travel dates: July 27th for 15 days

Application deadline: December 15, 2018

Trip summary: This program is open to all Early College and high school students aged 17 and above, for an ideal summer camp for students who would like to make friends with teens from all over the world, learn about Irish Culture, enjoy activities such as surfing, horseback riding, hiking and climbing, and enjoy themselves in a safe and friendly environment. A fun mix of Irish culture classes, field trips, activities, sports and outdoor adventure. Personal development and self-esteem. Social engagement, service projects and group work will enhance self-confidence, improve social skills, encourage teamwork and expand each student’s comfort zone in a context of balanced and supported challenges.

Costs: $4000

Intersession in Valladolid, Mexico

This trip is intended for: Students and community members

Tentative travel dates: December 14-23, 2019

Application deadline: December 15, 2018

Trip summary: Try something different from the resorts of Mexico and come with us for intersession/break to Asheville’s Sister City of Valladolid. You will love this safe, friendly, walkable, and culturally rich city. Day trips include visiting archeological sites, sampling local Yucatecan cuisine, learning about the Mayan culture, touring restored haciendas, sitting in on a local school, delving into local art, snorkeling, and meeting local friends.

Costs: $2200

Important Scholarship Information:
 

Students interested in studying in Spain should consider applying for the Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship. The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. It aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in education abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. The program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs. How to participate:

  1. Participants must be current A-B Tech students to register for the course aligned with the trip. To become a student at A-B Tech, go to www.abtech.edu and apply! The course can be taken for curriculum credit or audited (no grade).
  2. A non-refundable deposit must be made using the proper forms through each Trip Leader. The balance can be made in monthly payments; amounts depend on each trip cost and departure date. Contact the Trip Leader for specific payment information.
  3. Pre-departure meetings will be scheduled and participants are required to attend at least one.
  4. Forms: Before departure, students must sign the Study Abroad Program Release Form, thereby agreeing to abide by the Code of Student Conduct and waiving all claims against A-B Tech for injury or loss sustained during the Study Abroad Program. An Emergency Contact form will also be required of all participants, and the Trip Leader will collect forms a month before departure. Participants will also be required to have health and accident insurance valid in and outside of the United States during the entire period of participation.
