2020 Trips Abroad Summaries:
 

Japan:  Land of the Rising Sun

This trip is intended for: Students and community members

Tentative travel dates: May 2020

Application deadline: December 15, 2019

Trip summary: This trip will be led by a third-party provider, Explorica, by our History faculty member John Martin. Japan has had many identities through the centuries; its story is a fascinating one. Tokyo is the modern-day center of pop culture and business, while Kyoto remains the most traditional of the big cities. The country has unsurpassed natural beauty—see it from the window of the high-speed shinkansen train and in the majestic lakes and mountains of Hakone National Park. Price includes round-trip international flights; comfortable motor coach; bullet train; 7 overnight stays in hotels with private bathrooms; breakfast and dinner daily; travel insurance.

Costs: $3900

Service Learning Trip to Belize

This trip is intended for: Students and community members

Tentative travel dates: May 2020

Application deadline: December 13, 2019

Trip summary: This 9-day program through three cities in Belize gives students the opportunity to give back to the local community through volunteering and taking part in service learning projects. This program centers around the Cornerstone Foundation, whose mission is to develop and empower the community through improving the lives of children and adults in the surrounding area. Students will be working with the students of the Foundation with both educational and recreational activities. They will assist with tutoring and homework assistance, practicing extracurricular activities such as singing and sports, going on outings with the children, assisting in maintaining the yard of the facility, and much more. Students will participate in special activities with the children including traditional chocolate making, painting a mural, and taking part in a Foundation Fun Day, which includes activities that are typical for youth camps, such as games, storytelling, crafts, and more. In addition, there will be many recreational activities throughout the program, including visits to Mayan ruins, Garifuna drumming lessons, and coral reef snorkeling.

Costs: $3000

French Language and Culture in Montreal, Canada

This trip is intended for: Students and community members

Tentative travel dates: June-July 2020

Application deadline: Feb 1st, 2020

Trip summary: Study the French language for a month in lovely and culturally-rich Montreal, Canada. Students and community members will stay with a local family (home stay) and take French language classes from 9am-1pm daily for a month. There will be afternoon cultural activities and opportunities to apply the French language. The emphasis will be on learning French for everyday and academic communication. Class outings will allow students to use what they learn in class with locals.

Costs: $3300

Medical Assisting trip in Costa Rica

This trip is intended for: Students in the Medical Assisting or Allied Health program

Tentative travel dates: October 2020

Application deadline: February 2020

Trip summary: A-B Tech’s Medical Assisting students (and other Allied Health students) plan to travel to Costa Rica for a service trip to deliver health care and to learn about larger issues such as global health and culture. Students will get hands-on training in the field through shadowing professionals and helping run free clinics. Throughout the trip, there will be stops to serve in local clinics and to attend lectures on health, education, and nutrition.  An understanding of the culture is also important, so participants will visit a volcano and ruins, waterfalls, a national park, and a cocao farm. The trip is open for all Allied Health students.

History, Tourism, & Culture of Brewing in Ireland

This trip is intended for: students and alumni of the Brewing, Distillation, and Fermentation program (BDF) program

Tentative travel dates: November 20-29, 2020

Application deadline: March 2020

Trip summary: This program is catered to students in the BDF program as well as alumni of the program. The 7-day program includes visits to craft breweries and distilleries – 5-6 days in the Northwest, and one overnight and day in Dublin, (which would include a visit to the Guinness Brewery). Included in the visit are meetings with local craft breweries and distilleries, a tourism/hospitality session on the marketing of craft beers and local spirits, interactive lectures on the history and cultural background of the industry in Ireland, and a discussion on issues of sustainability and tourism in the industry.

Costs: $3200

Program fee includes: International Airfare, travel insurance, Accommodations, Irish-focused lectures, visits to local distilleries and restaurants, On-Tour Transportation, breakfasts and dinners, Full-Time Tour Director, Expert Local Guides, Guided Sightseeing

Important Scholarship Information:
 

Students interested should consider applying for the Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship. The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. It aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in education abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. The program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs. How to participate:

  1. Participants must be current A-B Tech students to register for the course aligned with the trip. To become a student at A-B Tech, go to www.abtech.edu and apply! The course can be taken for curriculum credit or audited (no grade).
  2. A non-refundable deposit must be made using the proper forms through each Trip Leader. The balance can be made in monthly payments; amounts depend on each trip cost and departure date. Contact the Trip Leader for specific payment information.
  3. Pre-departure meetings will be scheduled and participants are required to attend at least one.
  4. Forms: Before departure, students must sign the Study Abroad Program Release Form, thereby agreeing to abide by the Code of Student Conduct and waiving all claims against A-B Tech for injury or loss sustained during the Study Abroad Program. An Emergency Contact form will also be required of all participants, and the Trip Leader will collect forms a month before departure. Participants will also be required to have health and accident insurance valid in and outside of the United States during the entire period of participation.
