A-B Tech to Host Youth Culinary Competition November 3

A-B Tech will host the Joseph Initiative Y.E.S. Chef! Youth Culinary Program and Competition from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 3 in the Magnolia Building on the Asheville campus.

Attendees can arrive at any time and stay as long as they like. The cost to attend is $10 per person, which allows samples of four food items and a bottle of water. Once at the event, additional samples can be purchased for $3.  The culinary competition is one of the Brighter Futures Youth Enrichment Service programs. This program is about bringing local talent to our WNC restaurant/hospitality community while investing in Asheville’s future culinary artisans.

High school students are teaming up with industry chefs who are mentoring them in the fundamentals of culinary techniques. While working in the restaurant, students learn to create two healthy food items that will be presented in a culinary competition. The participating students and restaurants are:

  • Erwin High School students with The Biltmore Estate
  • Asheville High School students with Chestnut
  • North Buncombe High School students with Blue Ridge at The Omni Grove Park
  • Roberson High School students with Dining Innovations at Biltmore Farms DoubleTree

There will be a panel of professionals from the restaurant community judging the dishes. The youth attending the event will also have the opportunity to judge the food items made by their peers. The winning restaurant will receive a trophy that will be housed at their location for one year. The winning students will receive a chef jacket.
