Medical Laboratory Technology

This Medical Laboratory Technology curriculum prepares individuals to perform clinical laboratory procedures in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and immunohematology that may be used in the maintenance of health and diagnosis/treatment of disease.

Thank you for your interest in the Medical Laboratory Technology Program at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. Please read the following information thoroughly. Admission to the program follows the Selective criteria. We want to make sure you have the best possible chance of being selected by completing all processes and submitting all necessary application documents completely, correctly, and by the deadline!

Coursework emphasizes mathematical and scientific concepts related to specimen collection, laboratory testing and procedures, quality assurance, and reporting/recording and interpreting findings involving tissues, blood, and body fluids.

Graduates may be eligible to take examinations given by the Board of Registry of Medical Technologists of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or the National Certifying Agency. Employment opportunities include laboratories in hospitals, medical offices, industry, and research facilities.

We currently offer 2 MLT tracks. We have an in-person track and a distance (online) track. The in-person track is our normal track that has been offered since the program began. The distance (online) track has been created for students/hospitals/laboratories located greater than 45 miles from the A-B Tech main campus.

Students interested in the distance learning tract must be employed by a hospital or lab prior to applying to the online program. The hospital/lab must be willing to precept the students’ labs during their first year in the following subjects: microbiology, urinalysis, hematology, chemistry, transfusion services, immunology, and phlebotomy (if not already a phlebotomist). The hospital/lab must also be willing to host the student during their second-year clinical rotations in microbiology, hematology, transfusion services, and chemistry. An affiliation agreement between A-B Tech and the facility will be required for admission.

Please contact Jennifer Picher MS. MLS. ASCPCM, Chair of the MLT & PBT programs at jenniferkpicher@abtech or (828) 398-7266 for more information.

If you do not meet the greater than 45-mile qualification, but your lab/hospital would like to speak to our program regarding your admission into the distance track, please contact Jennifer Picher.
