A-B Trek Hiking Trail

The trail has its own new A-B Trek Hiking Trail webpage. Check back often! We will add updates and pictures as they become available.

We determined the best way to create and grow A-B Trek is to work on it in phases. In phase one, we have been developing the walking trail to meet minimum usability and safety requirements. In phase two, we’ll begin to add features such as picnic tables, benches, and kiosks. In phase three, we plan to grow the trail, exploring, for example, partnerships with Asheville High School, Mission Health,  and Buncombe County Greenways to encourage collaborative expansion for the greatest benefit to the community.

Mission will soon be finished with the dirt-fill site, a project that made part of the trail impassable.  In addition to recreating and resurfacing this section of the trail, Mission has graciously agreed to create a loop on the trail by connecting one of the new terraces to an existing terrace.

A local hardwood flooring company, Arbor Zen, has donated more than 400 trees. On April 21, the trees were planted in the dirt-fill area near the trail.

A-B Tech classes have been involved in the development of the trail. Last spring, the Geographic Information Systems GIS-215 class worked on mapping the trail with GPS coordinates. When completed, the map will be available online as well as posted at trailhead kiosks. Students in Construction Management CST-111 and 112 are building and donating a kiosk for the trail. Students in Civil Engineering CEG-235 are working on the trail in their Project Management and Estimating class.
