  • The A-B Tech Board of Trustees approved Padgett-Freeman Architects of Asheville and Lord, Aeck & Sargent of Chapel Hill to design the new Allied Health and Workforce Development Building on Feb. 6, 2012.
  • The programming phase for the building was completed and architects began work on the design phase in May 2012.
  • Padgett-Freeman presented the schematic design for first review on June 7, 2012.
  • A schematic design review meeting was held June 25, 2012. Padgett & Freeman incorporated feedback from the meeting to move forward with design development drawings.
  • In July 2012, Padgett & Freeman was in the design development project phase and Buncombe County held a mandatory pre-application meeting for construction manager at-risk service companies interested in the project. Statements of qualifications for companies in attendance were submitted to Buncombe County and A-B Tech for review.
  • The A-B Tech Board of Trustees approved the recommendation of the committee on the selection of the Construction Manager at Risk on Aug. 27, 2012. The Construction Manager at Risk assists in pre-construction project management support services and acts as a general contractor during the construction process.
  • Buncombe County contracted for pre-construction services with American South/H&M Constructors on Sept. 1, 2012.

  • During October 2012, preparations were being made to demolish the Pines and Madonna buildings to make room for parking for the new building. Padgett & Freeman were in the construction documents project phase. The project was registered with the U.S. Green Building Council to pursue LEED certification, in compliance with Senate Bill 668 and the NC 2012 Energy Code.
  • The City of Asheville's Technical Review Committee reviewed the project during a public meeting at 5 p.m. Dec. 11 in City Council Chambers.
  • By the end of January 2013, the construction documents drawing phase was 95 percent complete. Abatement of hazardous materials in the Pines and Madonna buildings and the boiler house was nearing completion. A pre-bid meeting for demolition of those facilities was held Jan. 22 and a bid opening scheduled for Feb. 6.
  • After working with Buncombe County, it was determined in July 2013 that the Allied Health and Workforce Development building will now be 158,000 sq. ft. without an auditorium or child care center. The building has been relocated on the same site and is in construction documents phase. Construction is exepected to begin Jan. 2014. 
  • The Auditorium/Multi-purpose building is in the programming phase as of August 2013. Buncombe County has awarded the design contract for the project to Clark-Nexsen/Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee. It will be located where the tennis courts currently are next to Sycamore. 
  • A parking deck for approximately 650 cars is in the construction documents phase. It will be located adjacent to the auditorium.
