A-B Tech Mentors

What is a mentor?

A mentor is a person or friend who guides a less experienced person by building trust and modeling positive behaviors. An effective mentor understands that his or her role is to be dependable, engaged, authentic, and tuned in to the needs of the mentee.  The act of mentoring is a series of ongoing and little successes. You will be able to make a real impact through consistent and ongoing relationship building!

Mentor program goals:

  • Guide and support first-generation and other identified college students at A-B Tech
  • Help students achieve academic goals
  • Help students successfully navigate the academic and cultural landscape of A-B Tech

Where do you fit?

According to sociologist Morris Zelditch, mentors are:

  • Advisors
People with career experience willing to share their knowledge
  • Supporters
People who give emotional and moral encouragement
  • Tutors
People who give specific feedback on one’s performance
  • Masters
In the sense of employers to whom one is apprenticed
  • Sponsors
Sources of information about and aid in obtaining opportunities
  • Role models
Identity, of the kind of person one should be to be an academic (or a successful professional in any field).

A-B Tech mentees are:

  • at least 18 years of age.
  • recruited through the Scholarship Coordinator’s office
  • available to meet with the mentor at mutually arranged times
  • scholarship applicants and/or scholarship recipients
  • committed to the 9-month pilot program

Recent A-B Tech GED graduates enrolled part time or fulltime on a two-year track are included in the program. Student mentee prospects are identified and offered a questionnaire.  Mentees are interviewed with goals of determining suitability and of pairing with appropriate mentor.

A-B Tech mentors are:

  • good listeners
  • able to advise and offer suggestions non prescriptively
  • willing and able agree to a lengthy commitment

The mentor will act as an intermediary to identify college resources to help the student remove obstacles and reach his or her college goals.

Mentors and mentees will meet weekly, either in person, by telephone, or online, and at least three in-person meetings per semester.  All face-to-face meetings will take place on A-B Tech’s campus. Meetings will focus on establishing a mentoring relationship, setting and addressing personal goals for the mentee, and devising and evaluating action plans.
