Internships Are Not Just For Four Year Universities

An internship is defined by the Department of Labor as any carefully monitored work or service experience in which an individual has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what he or she is learning throughout the experience.

For the past 3.5 years, A-B Tech has been offering internship opportunities to students in the Engineering and Applied Technology program areas.    This was introduced through a grant referred to as the NCAMA (The North Carolina Advanced Manufacturing Alliance).  The NCAMA is a consortium of 10 community college partners in 17 counties; representing 11 of the 13 Congressional Districts in the state.  The ultimate goal focused on career pathways moving underemployed, unemployed and displaced workers into viable career options.  Along with internships, other positive results have come to fruition, such as customized training requests, part-time or full-time employment opportunities for A-B Tech students and graduates for not only the curriculum programs falling under the NCAMA grant, but also the students from the Machining Fundamentals class which is offered through continuing education within the Economic & Workforce Development program area.

Through the NCAMA grant many success stories have unfolded.  To date, 75 students have been placed in internships with 106 job placement matches.  Many of the 106 have moved from successful internship experiences to fulltime employment offerings.  Most of these students had no previous manufacturing experience prior to enrollment at A-B Tech.

Funding for the NCAMA grant will end September 30, 2015.  Moving forward, A-B Tech will continue   building momentum connecting tomorrow’s workforce through work-based learning options such as co-op’s, apprenticeships through the NC Department of Commerce Division of Workforce Solutions Apprenticeship and Training Bureau, internships, and connecting students and graduates with local employers.

Curriculum students can check with their advisors about enrolling in work-based learning options listed as WBL in the course catalog.  Students within the continuing education classes offering this element will be signed up in class.

Additional questions can be directed to Debbie Cromwell, NCAMA Project Coordinator at 398-7603

We are proud to share the August 24th blood drive was a tremendous success!  With supplies low, all blood types needed, and an URGENT need for types O-, A-, B-, AB and Platelets at this time, it was wonderful to witness the giving nature of members of our community.  From the A-B Tech Madison staff and American Red Cross team, many thanks to all those who participated!

Earn a Business Administration Degree at A-B Tech Madison and A-B Tech South

Starting in fall 2015, A-B Tech Madison and A-B Tech South are partnering to offer the entire associate degree program in Business Administration at either location.

The business specific courses will be offered through interactive video (ITV) and the general education requirements will be available either as regular offerings at each site or through ITV.

Fall Semester schedule:  BUS 110, Intro to Business (MW, 1 p.m. - 1:50 p.m.); BUS 115, Business Law I (TTH, 10 a.m. - 10:50 a.m.)

Students can easily pair the above courses with general education classes at each location for a full-time course schedule.  This is a very exciting opportunity for Madison and South, and one that will benefit current students and also improve programmatic access for prospective students who live near these sites.

ITV – Interactive Video

ITV is now not only available on the A-B Tech Madison site, allowing students the opportunity to take classes on the Asheville campus from the Madison site, we now have several classes being hosted on the Madison Site and broadcast to other A-B Tech campuses!

ITV provides students the opportunity to sit in the classroom at one location and watch the entire instructional component via real-time video from the host location.  ITV technology allows the student the opportunity to ask questions, etc., during the class.  Courses offered via ITV are less likely to be canceled!
