Arts and Sciences Overview

General Education

Consistent with Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College’s commitment to student success, the general education program provides students with a knowledge base of historical, societal and environmental contexts for succeeding in the changing global community. The program represents a full spectrum of English composition, communication and literature; humanities and fine arts; social and behavioral sciences; natural sciences; chemistry and physics; mathematics; and related elective components.



For the Associate of Arts (AA) Degree,  the Associate of Science (AS) Degree, and the Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) Degree

  1. Students will communicate verbally in a clear and appropriate manner with their audience.
  2. Students will appraise meaning contained in significant humanistic and artistic expressions.
  3. Students will critically analyze information from the psychological, social, and historical perspectives to determine their place in society.
  4. Students will present evidence-based solutions to problems by applying mathematical or scientific methodologies.

Transfer Agreement

As part of the new Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) between the North Carolina Community College System and the University of North Carolina System, we have developed new Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees that are designed to better serve our students by:

  • Reducing the number of hours necessary to graduate
  • Ensuring transfer of courses to University of North Carolina system colleges
  • Providing clear pathways to graduation



Associate of Arts:             

Students will apply strategies for well-balanced living.

Students will analyze qualitative evidence to demonstrate information literacy.


Associate of Science:      

Students will apply strategies for well-balanced living.

Students will analyze quantitative evidence to demonstrate information literacy.


Associate of Fine Arts:     

Critique a work or form of artistic expression.

Demonstrate principles and techniques of artistic design.
