Math, English, Reading
The Adult Basic Education and High School Equivalency (ABE/HSE) program supports academic remediation in reading comprehension, mathematics, and language skills and provides pre-college instruction. Classes are offered for free throughout Buncombe and Madison counties for adult students to build their basic skills.
If you have been referred to Basic Skills after taking the Accuplacer and TABE college placement exams, you will need to meet with Peggy Hustad, the ABE/HSE recruiter and advisor. Please call her at (828) 398-7132 to schedule an appointment. Peggy will review your scores and discuss how the Basic Skills Program can help you improve your skills. She can also help you register for the Independent Study Lab or classes appropriate for your level. Once you have improved your skills and demonstrated (by a re-test on the TABE) that your new learning reaches the goals set by admissions, you will be referred back to Student Services to register for college classes.
For more information, students may call (828) 398-7132 or visit room 303 at the Hemlock Building on the Asheville Campus, or visit the Haynes Building at the Enka Site or the Ramsey Building at the Madison Site.
