Enroll in ABE/HSE Classes

The Adult Basic Education and High School Equivalency (ABE/HSE) program offers free classes to students seeking to improve their foundational skills in reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science. Our program provides pre-college instruction. Classes are offered throughout Buncombe and Madison counties.

Students can prepare to take the HiSET® or the GED® test for a high school equivalency credential. Those students who do not need the high school credential can improve their skills to be more competitive in the workforce, to prepare for the college placement test, or to qualify for credit-bearing college classes.

We offer face-to-face classes, independent study labs, and independent online study courses year-round.  Sessions are approximately eight weeks each. Regular attendance is required.

To register for an orientation, call (828) 398-7433 or email dots@abtech.edu.

How to start in the ABE/HSE program

After taking the Accuplacer, NC DAP, and/or TABE college placement exams, some students are referred to Transitional Studies.

Some students self-refer.

Either way, you will need to meet with an advisor.  Contact DOTS at (828) 398-7433 or email at dots@abtech.edu to schedule an appointment.

We will review your scores, discuss your options, and assist you with registration into an Independent Study Lab or classes appropriate for your level. Once you have improved your skills and demonstrated (by a re-test on the TABE) that your new learning reaches the goals set by admissions, you will be referred back to Student Services to register for college classes.

What's new in ABE/HSE

ABE/HSE is the program in Transitional Studies that prepares students to pass the GED® exam.  While a student in our classes may take GED® tests and earn a GED®, we can no longer officially refer to the classes or program by that name.

There are now multiple test options for a student to pursue a HSE credential.  GED® is a registered trademark for one of the exams a student might take.  HiSet and TASC are the two additional test options that have been developed. A-B Tech is in the process of becoming certified to offer the HiSet exam through the DOTS, and anticipates eligibility to offer the TASC exam.
