February 18, 2016 Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes

The Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees convened a meeting on Thursday, February 18, 2016, at 4:00 p.m. in the Simpson Conference Room in the Simpson Administrative Building. Joe Brumit, Chair, presided.

The following members of the Executive Committee were present: Chair Joe Brumit, Don Locke, Richard Hurley, Mary Ann Rice, and Mandy Stone. Also present were Dr. Dennis King, President; Carolyn Rice, Board secretary; and Chris Campbell, College attorney, via conference phone.

Chair Joe Brumit welcomed the Executive Committee and called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.

Dr. King informed the Executive Committee that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss a naming opportunity for the Event Center.

Event Center Naming Discussion

Dr. King informed the Committee that the College is negotiating with the Mission Hospital Foundation for the purchase of a naming license for the Event Center.

The Mission Hospital Foundation has offered the College one million dollars ($200,000 a year for five years) to name the Event Center on campus in return for use of meeting space in the facility. The naming license would be for fifteen years, with an option to renegotiate the terms at the end of that time.

The Committee discussed several alternative options and agreed that the terms of the naming license should be offered for ten years. The Committee also agreed to take the use of the meeting space in the facility out of the naming license agreement and to offer the Mission Hospital Foundation a Joint Usage Agreement for the same period of time. The Joint Usage Agreement would emphasize the many services, donations, and equipment Mission has given the College over the years, in return for the use of the facilities in the Event Center at no charge.

The Committee also stressed the benefit of having a professional relationship between the Mission Hospital Foundation and the College. This is an important partnership that will be extremely beneficial to the community. A-B Tech prepares students for careers in allied health, and Mission Hospital is the largest employer in both Buncombe and Madison counties.

The Committee agreed that the Event Center should be called “Mission Health / A-B Tech Event Center.” The Committee also agreed to have Mr. Chris Campbell negotiate directly with Mission Hospital regarding the use of event space and the length of time of the contract.

The Committee recommended that the President bring a resolution regarding naming the Event Center “Mission Health / A-B Tech Event Center” to the full Board. A separate Joint Use Agreement Memorandum of Understanding will be discussed and negotiated between Mission Health and Mr. Campbell.

Adjourn

The meeting was adjourned at 4:50 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
