New Student Enrollment Information

Steps for enrolling at A-B Tech to take Curriculum Courses (college credit).


Apply to A-B Tech

  • Go to to complete three steps:  1) Residency Determination through the NC Residency Determination Service, and 2) a general College Application.  You will need to enter your Residency Certification Number on your application.  3)  We recommend requesting your High School Transcript (see for further instructions).  You may be able to use your transcript for placement.

Complete New Student Orientation (NSO)

  • Approximately 24 hours after completing your College application, you should receive an email containing your student ID number.  Once you've received this information, please contact us at 828-398-7700 to schedule a date and time to complete NSO at A-B Tech Madison.  You may also opt to complete your NSO online. If you plan to take 100% online classes, you will also need to complete Moodle Online Orientation.  for more information about online class readiness, go to

Complete Placement Testing

  • English and/or math placement is required for entrance into most academic programs with English and/or math pre-requisites.  Placement options include:  transfer credit in college-level English and/or math; high school transcripts showing a 2.6 or higher unweighted GPA and completion of specific math classes; an alternate approved test like the SAT or ACT; or the college placement test (called NC-DAP). Select an Academic Program

  • Submit transcript(s) from other colleges attended if transfer credit is desired.
  • Meet with a staff member at A-B Tech Madison (or a College Entry Advisor in the K. Ray Bailey Student Services Center on the main campus in Asheville).   For advising at A-B Tech Madison, give us a call at 828-398-7700 to schedule a date/time.  For help determining which program to select, explore our online Career Coach tool at or contact Career Services at

Apply for Financial Aid & Scholarships

  • We recommend that you complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at and include A-B Tech's school code (004033).  Be sure to regularly check Financial Aid Self-Service and your A-B Tech student email account for any additional requests or updates from the Financial Aid Office.  For additional details, visit A financial aid advisor is on the A-B Tech Madison Campus on Mondays, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. (no appointment necessary).  For FAFSA assistance on the Asheville campus, visit to schedule an appointment.  Information about applying for A-B Tech scholarships is also available through Financial Aid Self Service.
