Facts about A-B Tech Security

A-B Tech employs full-time and part-time Police and Security Officers to serve the campus community.

All personnel are trained in CPR, first aid and other certifications.

All officers are trained to respond to emergencies on the campus and will be the first responders in the following situations:

  • Accidents (both motor vehicle and personal)
  • Fire and medical emergencies
  • Police and civil emergencies
  • Weather related emergencies

Officers are also charged with enforcing all College policies and regulations regarding safety and security. They are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Emergencies

To reach Security in an emergency during normal business hours, dial Ext. 125 from any campus phone. The College Operator will answer and dispatch a Security Officer.

Normal business hours:

Monday-Thursday, 7:30a.m. -10:00p.m.

Friday, 7:30a.m. -4:30p.m.

Outside normal working hours:

The on-duty Officer can be reached directly by cell phone at 279-3166 for the Asheville Campus and 301-7150 for the Enka Campus.

Routine Requests for Assistance

Routine requests for assistance include key extractions and jump-starts. Officers do not change tires or perform extensive motor vehicle repairs.

Security officers will also lock and unlock classrooms and other facilities if authorized by the President's Office.

During normal business hours, officers may be reached by dialing the College Operator, Ext. 0. The operator will contact officers by radio as they are not always in the office.

Each parking lot on Campus has a sign on a light pole with a letter and a number on it. When calling for assistance in a parking lot, give the letter and number of the parking lot you are in for a quicker response from Security.

College Policy Concerning Alcohol and Illicit Drugs

A-B Tech recognizes the serious nature and potentially harmful effects of using controlled substances and/or alcohol in the workplace and educational setting. To assist personnel and students in meeting our drug free goal, the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession, or use of a controlled substance and/or alcohol on college property is strictly prohibited.

The college will impose disciplinary sanctions on students and employees for violation of the above policy.

Responsible choices for those who drink:

  • Do not make alcohol the primary focus of any activity.
  • Set a limit on how many drinks you have and adhere to it.
  • Drink slowly; don't gulp your drinks.
  • Eat while you drink; food slows the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream.
  • Recognize the choice to drink or abstain as a personal choice and not a group decision. Never coerce someone to drink.
  • Do not drink and drive. Find alternative transportation or a place to stay if you have been drinking. Use designated drivers if you are going with a group.
  • Remember that there is no way to sober up quickly. Coffee, cold showers, or exercise may make you more awake, but not more sober. Time is the only remedy for over indulging.

Sexual Assault Policy

Sexual assault and date or acquaintance rape on college campuses poses significant ethical, philosophical, and procedural dilemmas for professionals in the fields of security and counseling.

A-B Tech recognizes the importance of assisting students who are victims of sexual assaults in regaining a sense of their personal dignity and control of their lives, as well as providing them with guidance relative to decisions they must make. It is for this purpose that several A-B Tech departments have collaboratively developed policies and procedures for responding to the needs of students who are victims of sexual assault.

In the event of a sexual assault on an A-B Tech student, the Security and Student Services Counseling departments are responsible for responding to the victims and for providing them with the necessary assistance in keeping with college protocol. The Security Office recently began a Blind Reporting System in which the victim can report information about the sexual assault and the suspect but does not have to give victim information. This is important because it informs the Security Office of known suspects, which may prevent another sexual assault and it allows the victim to keep his/her privacy.

In addition to offering a range of services to victims of sexual assault, staff members of each department are on hand to inform students of other community assistance programs that compliment college services. Anyone who has been the victim of sexual assault should contact one of the departments mentioned.

Campus Security

College security personnel have the obligation to enforce all college policies and regulations regarding safety and security. In the performance of their duties, security personnel can ask for identification and detain students. It is always in the student's best interest to cooperate with security officers, even if the student feels that he or she has done nothing wrong. Failure to cooperate can lead to serious disciplinary consequences. Also, many matters that are violations of public law can and will be handled on campus and without the involvement of local law enforcement agents, if the student cooperates. Traffic violations on campus are an example.

Campus security personnel do not have the authority to enforce civil law but work closely with state and local police authorities, which responds immediately when summoned to the campus. Campus security may detain an individual for violating North Carolina Law.

It is the policy of A-B Tech to encourage all students or employees who feel they are victims of crimes to report these events promptly to campus authorities.

Regardless of which employee is notified, the college will respond to such incidents or emergencies by taking full and complete statements from all individuals involved. Whether further actions will be taken, including campus discipline or notification of off-campus law enforcement agencies will depend upon the particulars of the incident.
