The Board of Trustees of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College is seeking a dynamic, visionary and inspirational leader.
Rated as an exceptional institution by the state of North Carolina, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, or A-B Tech, is celebrating 50 years of dedication to student success. From its beginnings as an industrial education center in 1959, A-B Tech has grown into a comprehensive community college that enrolls more than 26,500 students, giving it the largest headcount of any institution of higher education in Western North Carolina. The College offers 67 innovative career and college transfer programs and thousands of workforce development/continuing education courses.
Located in the scenic French Broad River valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is the largest city in Western North Carolina and home to about 69,000 residents. Its many accolades have included being named one of the “Best Places for Business and Careers” by Forbes, one of the top 12 travel destinations in the world by Frommer’s and one of 10 Great Adventure Towns by National Geographic Adventure. More than 386,000 residents live in the metro area, and its major industries include health services, education, government, manufacturing, retail, and leisure and hospitality.
Required Qualifications:
A master’s degree is required. An earned doctorate degree from an accredited institution is preferred.
Successful senior-level administrative experience is required. Experience in a community college is highly desirable.
The successful candidate also will meet the following criteria:
- An understanding of and a commitment to the comprehensive community college
- Successful educational leadership focused on learning and experience in program development, accreditation and outcomes assessment
- Evidence of an active involvement with students and a demonstrated concern for student success
- Demonstrated management skills in resource development, financial management, facilities development, team building, strategic planning, supporting the college foundation through fund raising, institutional assessment
- Effective interpersonal communications and mentoring skills
- A successful record of maintaining and sustaining comprehensive relationships with faculty, staff and students and with the college’s educational centers; demonstrated successful experiences in the professional development of faculty and staff
- Ability to understand the history and culture of A-B Tech with the ability to effectively communicate with the community it serves
- Decisive leadership experiences and a decision-making style firmly rooted in collaborative and nurturing relationships which seek to empower others
- Evidence of an understanding of the use and implementation of educational and administrative technology and a successful regard for technological change
- Flexibility and responsiveness to new ways of carrying out the College’s mission
- Successful record of promoting partnerships with various constituencies such as higher education, public schools, business and industry, local government and health care organizations.
- An ability to lead change in a positive and collaborative way
- Demonstrated success in advocacy and an ability to represent the college’s needs at all levels of government.
- Evidence of effective leadership in supporting economic and workforce development and in establishing a positive institutional presence and image in the community.
- Demonstrated leadership in diversity and promotion of an environment which values and respects differences.
