A-B Tech Accreditation Reaffirmed by SACSCOC

June 25, 2014

The Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has reaccredited A-B Tech for the next 10 years. SACSCOC representatives notified the college Thursday and will make an official announcement next month.SACSCOC is the recognized regional accrediting body for 11 southern states and Latin America for higher education institutions that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degrees.

“This is wonderful news that affirms the quality of programs, faculty and staff at A-B Tech,” said Interim President Dennis F. King, Ed.D., who served as Special Assistant to the President for SACSCOC Reaccreditation last year. “After a thorough year-long review, the final report we submitted to SACS was accepted with no additional follow-up required.”

King praised the work of A-B Tech’s SACSCOC reaccreditation team, including Associate Vice President for Instruction Gene Loflin, who oversees SACSCOC accreditation for the college, Director of Curriculum Quality Assurance and Assessment Fiona Chrystall and Associate Director of Faculty Development and Assessment Barbara Brownsmith-Campbell.

“Being regionally accredited is vital to any institution and A-B Tech’s reaccreditation assures our students and community that we are effectively fulfilling our mission,” King said. “SACSCOC accreditation is significant because it determines whether our students’ degrees, certificates and coursework are accepted by four-year institutions and potential employers.”

Colleges seeking reaccreditation must demonstrate compliance with SACSCOC requirements and also develop a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) that addresses an issue related to student learning. A-B Tech’s QEP focused on student online success with the goal of improving the readiness of students entering 100 percent online classes.

QEP team leader Beth Stewart, Dean of Arts and Sciences, and QEP Coordinator Katie Hast did exceptional work on the plan, King said.
