Become a weather spotter for the National Weather Service

May 18, 2012

lightningA-B Tech Community College’s Institute for Climate Education is sponsoring a free severe weather workshop that includes training by the National Weather Service to become a Skywarn spotter.

The workshop will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 2 in Ferguson Auditorium on the College’s Asheville campus. There will be an hour break for lunch. Certificates will be given to participants who complete the basic and advanced training sessions and those 18 years and older can volunteer to become Skywarn spotters. Skywarn is a volunteer program with nearly 290,000 trained severe weather spotters to provide timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning more about severe weather,” says Pamela McCown, coordinator of the Institute for Climate Education at A-B Tech. “This spring has already been an active period with a number of severe thunderstorms in the region.  We will learn what makes a storm severe, what to look for to protect you and your family, and how to report severe events to our local forecast office.”

There is no fee for the workshop, but pre-registration is required by emailing the participant’s full name and contact number to Pamela McCown at pmccown@abtech.edu.
