Knowledge Bowl Moves to A-B Tech

September 26, 2005

The 38th annual Knowledge Bowl has moved to A-B Tech, after 25 years at UNCA.

A-B Tech will coordinate and host the annual Knowledge Bowl on the Asheville Campus.  The purpose of the event is to allow high school students with scholastic ability to compete against students from other schools.

“A-B Tech is thrilled to be hosting this regional event for high school students,” said Michele Hathcock, director of Recruitment and Student Activities. “It gives them an opportunity to come together in a fun, competitive environment and test their knowledge. They also get a chance to become more familiar with the North Carolina Community College System.”

Each school sends a team of six students to answer an array of questions written by A-B Tech faculty members in the five categories of English, history, mathematics, science and general knowledge.

During the first weekend of competition, the teams will be in rooms by themselves where they are given 75 questions. For every question answered correctly, the team gets a bonus question of varying points. The eight teams with the highest points return the following Saturday for head-to-head competition in a double-elimination tournament.

The 2005 Knowledge Bowl will be held Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 in Ferguson Auditorium. The winning school receives a $400 cash prize and a large traveling trophy to display at the school for a year. Each first-place team member will receive a small trophy and the A-B Tech Bookstore will also provide six hardcover dictionaries. The second-place team receives $100 for its school and each member will get a plaque. All participants will receive a certificate. In 2004, 25 teams from all over the region competed.

Registration deadline is Oct. 21. Please contact Hathcock at 254-1921, Ext. 203 for more information and to register a team.
