Vesting Schedule
Unreduced Benefits
- Reach age 65 and complete 5 years of creditable service
- Reach age 60 and complete 25 years of creditable service
- Complete 30 years of creditable service, at any age
Reduced Benefits
- Reach age 50 and complete 20 years of creditable service
- Reach age 60 and complete 5 years of membership service
Short-Term Disability
Short-Term Disability benefits are payable for a period of 365 days after a 60-day waiting period. To qualify the following requirements must be met:
- Have at least 1 year of contributing membership service in the Retirement System
- Are determined to be mentally or physically disabled for the further performance of your usual occupation
- Disability was incurred at the time of active employment
- The disability has been continuous
Long-Term Disability
Long-Term Disability benefits are payable after the conclusion of the short-term disability period for an additional 36 months. To qualify the following requirements must be met:
- Have at least 5 years of contributing membership service in the Retirement System
- Make application to receive long-term benefits within 180 days after the conclusion of the short-term disability period
- Must be certified by the medical Board to be mentally or physically disabled for the further performance of your usual occupation
- Disability must have been continuous, likely to be permanent, and incurred at the time of active employment
- Must terminate employment as a permanent full-time State employee
- Not eligible to receive an unreduced retirement benefit from the Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System
