Shana Alldredge from Erwin High's Career Academy sent a note to Jane Headland, Nursing instructor; Dolly Horton, Medical Assisting chair; Brenda Causey, Nursing chair; and Ned Fowler, Allied Health and Public Service Education dean, thanking them for the time they spent explaining the programs to her students. "My students enjoyed the hands-on activities. Thank you for opening my students' eyes to what's available in the medical area at A-B Tech," she wrote.
A-B Tech's Global Institute for Sustainability Technologies (GIST) has received approval from the N.C. Board of Architects to be an approved sponsor of continuing educational courses. GIST classes and workshops will be able to provide credit for continuing education courses to architects licensed by the board.
A former student who works as an LPN left the following voicemail for Nursing Chair Brenda Causey: "I spoke with nurses in the hospital where I work that are so good. I asked them where they got their education and they said A-B Tech and I got to thinking and I wonder if any of us ever got to say thank you for the education we received from you and from the facility. So I am calling to say thank you. It was hard as heck but it was a great education. And I appreciate that and the work that you do to provide care for all of our community wherever we go."
ACA 115 student Judy Johnson wrote an e-mail to thank instructor Jan King for her assistance. "I learned a lot about how to learn. I'm not afraid to take a test anymore because I know how to get information in my brain," Johnson wrote. "I made the President's List last semester."
Bailey Brewington, Veterinary Medical Technology student, received a 2009 Sue Busch Memorial Award from the Pet Care Trust. Brewington was one of 10 students nationwide to receive the $500 award for graduating veterinary technician students.
Chris Webb, a student in Erin Lesh's English 111 class, submitted his "Sources of Authenticity" essay to Mountain Xpress, and it was scheduled to be published during the week of May 27 or the week after. "Chris was a soldier in the Iraq war and he talks about the relative authenticity of people's real response to their claim to 'support the troops' when he returned home, particularly in 'liberal' Asheville, and the effect that it has had on him. It is one of the most poignant papers that I have read in my almost seven years doing this," Lesh said.
Russ Yelton, Entrepreneurial Ventures and Business Incubator executive director, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the National Business Incubation Association (NBIA). Yelton will sit on the membership and audit committees during his first year. NBIA is the world's leading organization advancing business incubation and entrepreneurship and serves more than 1,900 members in more than 60 countries.
