A 2008 A-B Tech graduate and current student at East Carolina University has received a perfect score on an international engineering certification exam. Burns Mijanovich took the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) exam Jan. 31 and became the first person at ECU to earn a perfect score on it. The Marshall native graduated from A-B Tech with a degree in Information Systems Security.
Suzannah Landingham, Early College student, won fourth place in the statewide Poetry Out Loud Competition. Poems she recited were "Sonnet XXIX: When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes," by William Shakespeare, "I Go Back to May 1937," by Sharon Olds, and "They are Hostile Nations" by Margaret Atwood. Luke Tilson, a graduate of A-B Tech, wrote a note to former instructor Mike O'Kane, interim director of Online Learning, about his classes at Appalachian State compared to his classes at A-B Tech. "A-B Tech had very, very good teachers. I really wish a lot of people in my class could have learned from you. Not to say they (the teachers) aren't good here, they just don't really teach like they do at A-B Tech," he wrote.
Gov. Bev Purdue has appointed A-B Tech Trustee Kay Myers to the Governor's Western Residence Board of Directors. The board provides support to the state in the use and maintenance of the Governor's Residence as a meeting location for civic and cultural groups in the western part of the state. Members also increase awareness of state government through expanded use of the property.
Megan Redding, an aide in the Academic Learning Center math lab, has been awarded a $10,000 renewable Trustee Scholarship to Drury University in Springfield, MO. Megan graduated from A-B Tech in spring 2005 with an associate in science degree. She is an alumni member of Phi Theta Kappa.
Part-time Security Officer Rodney Ware recently got a surprise when he was delivering mail to the Enka campus. His photo was on the front of a brochure he had in his hands for the Navy Reserve. Ware, a second-class petty officer, was pictured with Tessa, a military K-9 police drug dog. He has been with the Navy for four years and started at A-B Tech in August 2006.
Shelley White, Occupational and Public Service Training executive director, was honored during the YWCA's 18th annual Tribute to Women of Influence (TWIN) Awards banquet March 26 at the Renaissance Hotel. TWIN honors the professional achievements of women and companies who support the advancement of women.
