Funding for A-B Tech Foundation scholarships comes from a variety of sources. Twenty-one students are featured this month representing eight different scholarships awarded for the 2008-09 academic year.
Melisa Coates
Melisa Coates received the Lowe's Buchan Club Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate in Arts Degree program. "I work at a summer camp for children and my goal is to become a counselor for troubled kids and families," she said. Melisa enjoys mountain biking, running, rock climbing, reading and swimming.
Anna McClintock
Anna McClintock received the Mary Louise Carpenter Scholarship and is enrolled in the Culinary Technology program. "I plan to work in an upscale restaurant or hotel where I can really expand my skill level and develop a deeper understanding for the creativity involved with food," she said. Anna is a member of the A-B Tech Hot Food Team. She enjoys horseback riding, playing trumpet in musical organizations and teaching trumpet to high school students.
Carrie Baldwin
Carrie Baldwin received the Mt. Renaissance Adventure Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program "I plan on working as a registered nurse at Mission Hospital. I want to return to school to get my bachelor's degree in nursing, then I would like to become a nurse practitioner," she said. Carrie likes traveling, making jewelry and spending time with her family.
Wakeena Sweat
Wakeena Sweat received the Mary Hay Gwynn Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Emergency Medical Science program. "I plan to become a paramedic, then get my BSN. Following that, I'd like to go back to become a nurse practioner," she said. Wakeena enjoys church, reading and time with her daughter.
Keith Schwock
Keith Schwock received the Mark Rosenstein, The Marketplace Scholarship and is enrolled in the Culinary Technology program. "I plan to continue my growth in my culinary career by training under Chef Kevin Walker after my graduation," he said. Keith is interested in learning more about competing, which he hopes to do as a member of the school's culinary team.
Cynthia Romstadt
Cynthia Romstadt received the Mark Rosenstein, The Marketplace Scholarship and is enrolled in the Culinary Technology program. "I plan to find work in a local, independent restaurant where my skills can be utilized, appreciated and challenged," she said. Cynthia loves to exercise, play with her German Shepard, play volleyball and cook, especially breakfast foods.
Judith Lowry
Judith Lowry received the North Carolina Retired School Personnel Scholarship and is enrolled in the Dental Hygiene program. "I plan on practicing dental hygiene in a private practice as well as donating time to underserved communities and missionary work oversees," she said. Judith enjoys shopping and spending time with her husband and family.
Lester Baker
Lester Baker received the Marie Love Cochran Scholarship and is enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program. "I would like to work for one of the local manufacturers and move into quality management," he said. Lester enjoys movies, reading, church, and working with children.
Jennifer Hopper
Jennifer Hopper received the Mary Hay Gwynn Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Emergency Medical Science program."At this time, I am waiting to take my state test for CNA. When I do that, I will be able to get a part-time job as a CNA I," she said. Jennifer says her children are her life. They play ball, ride four-wheelers and attend church. She sings in the church choir and volunteers at Mission Hospital.
Darlene Colclasure
Darlene Colclasure received a Madison County Scholarship Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate in Arts Degree program. "My current plans are to be a Special Education teacher," she said. Darlene loves watching her 7-year-old son play baseball, football and basketball. She also loves to shop with her 4-year-old daughter.
Angela Davis
Angela Davis received a Madison County Scholarship Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the General Occupational Technology program. "I would like to become a registered nurse and work in hospice," she said. Angela likes to spend time with her four children and volunteer at the Madison County Animal Shelter.
Erin Honeycutt
Erin Honeycutt received a Madison County Scholarship Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Dental Assisting program. "I'd like to begin working immediately after graduation and possibly return to A-B Tech for Dental Hygiene in a few years," she said. Erin's interests include her two children, local festivals, weaving and sewing.
Kelci King
Kelci King received a Madison County Scholarship Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate in Arts Degree program. "I plan to earn my degree at A-B Tech, then transfer to either UNCA or ETSU to major in elementary education," she said. Kelci barrel races in the National Barrel Horse Association and enjoys fishing, four-wheeling and water skiing.
Mary Nawotka
Mary Nawotka received a Madison County Scholarship Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate in Arts Degree program, "I am still deciding, but I will most likely go into mental health nursing. I want to focus on teenagers," she said. Mary enjoys church, snowboarding, hiking and traveling.
Audrey Pratt
Audrey Pratt received a Madison County Scholarship Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. "I want to gain some hospital experience before becoming a home care nurse," she said. Audrey loves gardening, sewing, hiking and reading books.
Bret Somers
Bret Somers received a Madison County Scholarship Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the General Occupational Technology program. "I plan to transfer to the Associate Degree Nursing program and become a nurse at a local hospital or long-term care facility," he said. Bret enjoys parachuting, deep sea fishing, and working with dogs.
Cynthia Sexton
Cynthia Sexton received a Madison County Scholarship Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. "I want to obtain my RN license, then work on my BSN degree," she said. Cynthia enjoys spending time with family and friends during cookouts, and spending time with the elderly and listening to their stories.
Tabitha Ramsey
Tabitha Ramsey received a Madison County Scholarship Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate in Arts program. "I plan to transfer to East Tennessee State University and become an elementary school teacher," she said. Tabitha enjoys going to church, watching movies and singing.
Zachary Robinson
Zachary Robinson received a Madison County Scholarship Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Electronics Engineering Technology program. "After getting my two-year degree, I plan to get a job with U.S. Cellular as an engineer," he said. Zachary loves to ride dirt bikes and motorcycles. He also enjoys lifting weights and takes karate three days a week.
Lorelei Scollin
Lorelei Scollin received a Madison County Scholarship Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Radiography program. "I hope to work in the area at one of the many hospitals. I am working very part time at Mission, so maybe that will lead to a full-time position after graduation," she said. Lorelei loves playing with her son, gardening, reading, hiking, and spending time with her family.
Hayli Teague
Hayli Teague received a Madison County Scholarship Fund Scholarship and is enrolled in the Medical Transcription program. "I plan to use my diploma in medical transcription to obtain a stay-at-home job to supplement my income," she said. Hayli loves art and anything computer related.
