A-B Tech Dental Program Partnership Receives Proclamation from Mayor

Dental Assisting

Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy issued a proclamation honoring the children's dental sealant program A-B Tech and Eblen-Kimmel Charities have operated for the past 10 years. Dental Assistant and Dental Hygiene students at A-B Tech volunteer their time for the program.

Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy issued a proclamation for a children's dental sealant program, now in its 10th year at A-B Tech's dental clinic, for National Children's Dental Health Month in February.

The College's partnership with Eblen-Kimmel Charities is able to provide dental sealants to all second-graders in Buncombe County and Asheville City schools at no cost on Fridays, from January through May.

This past year, 116 dental assistant and dental hygiene students at A-B Tech and dentists placed 1,846 sealants on 692 students from 17 schools in the county, saving families nearly $93,000, according to Eblen-Kimmel.

With the cost of dental care out of reach for many families and their children, this unique partnership offers a way to provide free dental care to children and an inexpensive method to the organizations involved.

Additional assistance has come from a donation from A-B Tech Foundation and Eblen-Kimmel board member Dr. Jack Teague to help underwrite the program. "It is an honor for me to help with this program in this respect. Eblen-Kimmel Charities has made an impact in Western North Carolina in so many aspects and especially with the sealant program partnership during these past years. It is a pleasure to work with such a positive group and program that has been so effective," Dr. Teague said.

Eblen-Kimmel charities also recognized members of A-B Tech for their dedication including Shaun Tate, Allied Dental Programs chair; President Emeritus K. Ray Bailey; Ned Fowler, Allied Health and Public Service Education dean; Max Queen, Risk Management and Operations vice president; Trustee Dr. Joe Roberson, and the dental students at the College.

Created by Eblen-Kimmel board member Dr. Keith Black in partnership with A-B Tech, the Buncombe County Commissioners, Buncombe County Health Center, Buncombe County Dental Society, area dental hygienists and dental assistants, the Janirve Foundation, Mission Hospital Foundation, Densply, Inc., Patterson Dental Supply, Buncombe County and Asheville City Schools, and Ingles Markets, the Dental Sealant Program provides sealants to children whose families may not have been able to afford them.
