A-B Tech graduate Anna Gurynovich is attending the College of Dentistry at UNC after four years in the United States.
Anna Gurynovich came to the United States from Belarus four years ago and started taking ESL classes as soon as she got to Asheville. "I went to classes and got information about A-B Tech and what a good place it was," she said.
In May 2008, Gurynovich earned her Associate in Science degree and transferred to UNC Asheville for one semester while waiting for acceptance to the UNC Chapel Hill dental assistant program. "I tried to apply to the Dental Assistant program at A-B Tech, but I did not do well on reading test. The scores were lower than when I first came to America. The placement test was stressful," she said.
Gurynovich decided to complete her degree at A-B Tech with transferable credits so she could go to UNC, to meet her goal to become a dentist. She wants to work as a dental assistant after earning her certification to pay for her doctorate.
"I don't have enough credits to get into dental school and at the same time I need to get more knowledge and get better at English," she said. "I plan to spend one summer to complete requirements and apply to dental school. I have to apply one year in advance."
"Anna is truly a delightful young lady. I have known her for several years now and she consistently keeps me updated with her academic progress," said Ren Decatur, English/Communications instructor. "She is as beautiful on the inside as she is outwardly. Her success story is one we should be proud of, for sure. She is utterly devoted to her family and one of the reasons she strives to succeed as she does is so that she can better provide for her aging parents and for other members of her family."
Gurynovich has completed her first semester at UNC with a 4.0 GPA. She attends UNC part time to earn the credits needed for dental school and is a full-time student at the College of Dentistry for dental assisting. "I got much knowledge from A-B Tech. UNC is much harder than UNC Asheville and much harder grading system. An 80 is a D rather than a B. I have to try really hard not to get kicked out of school. A-B Tech helped me prepare," she said.
