In an effort to reduce the number of lives lost each year due to automobile crashes, A-B Tech is partnering with the Asheville Police Department to offer a two-day safe driver training course in March for licensed drivers of all ages.
The course is scheduled March 20 and 21, and will be repeated March 27 and 28. The classroom instruction will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and driving range instruction will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Safety Awareness For Every Driver (SAFE Driver) will cover the physics associated with vehicle crashes and will teach participants how to avoid crashes by using proper driving techniques. Students will learn through lecture, discussion, demonstrations and practical exercises on a driving range.
"Our goal is to develop safe driving skills and decrease the number of traffic fatalities," said Sgt. Stony Gonce of the Asheville Police Department Traffic Safety Unit. "We encourage parents to be involved so they can reinforce what the younger driver is learning and have a larger impact on their driving habits." Though the class is for drivers of any age, drivers in the 16-24 age group have a higher percentage of fatalities.
Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in America, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA research has shown that the leading behaviors related to teen crashes are inexperience and immaturity combined with excessive speed and driver distraction. The course was developed to help address these issues and to reduce the frequency of crashes involving teens, reduce the number of injuries and prevent traffic-related deaths.
The cost of the class is $79 and includes all materials and time on the driving range. For more information, call 254-1921, Ext. 134.
