Tech Notes

Art Museum Passes Available

Free Asheville Art Museum passes are available for employees and students. They can be reserved up to a week in advance for a one-week checkout, based on availability. There is a limit of six passes per person. A set of 25 passes is also available for instructors to take a class. Contact Sue Donato at Ext. 7572 or sdonato@abtech.edu for more information.

Emergency Services Academy Receives Thanks for CIT Assistance

Skye Myrick, Emergency Services Academy associate dean, received a note of thanks from Margaret Peacock of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)-Charlotte for assistance in setting up a Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) program, similar to the one at A-B Tech, at Central Piedmont Community College. "This is a big relief to us and we greatly appreciate your assistance," Peacock wrote.

Faculty Thanks

Student David Faulhaber wrote a letter to President Betty Young expressing his appreciation for the faculty members at A-B Tech. After experiencing a very difficult semester, he had decided to withdraw from school and return to his home in the Outer Banks until he received encouragement from several instructors. He thanked Pam Silvers, Business Computer Technologies chair; Kathy Toler, Business Administration instructor; Pete Kennedy, GIS/ Business Computer Technologies instructor; Ron Koppenheffer, Math adjunct instructor; Joe Morrison, Business Computer Technologies adjunct instructor; Skye Myrick, Emergency Services Academy associate dean; and Marlene Roden, Business Computer Technologies instructor. "Each and every one of the above have gone beyond the call of duty in helping me and there are really no words to express the deep sense of gratitude and appreciation I have for these wonderful people," he wrote.

Yelton Featured on Green Monday

Russ Yelton, Executive Director of Entrepreneurial Ventures and Business Incubation, was a panelist for the Asheville Sustainability Center's third Green Monday presentation Dec. 1 at the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce. Green Mondays are an open forum to provide understanding and advance possible pathways to sustainability.

Invitational Education Committee Seeking Ambassadors

Members of the Invitational Education Committee will again serve as ambassadors for the College during the first week of school in January. Ambassadors will assist students with directional questions as well as provide general information about the campus. This project is open to our campus community and if you are interested in serving as an ambassador (in 30-minute increments), please contact Darryl Rhymes in Human Resources at 254-1921, Ext. 114.

A-B Tech Teams Place in Juicy Ideas Contest

Two student teams from A-B Tech placed in the top 15 out of 79 teams in the Juicy Ideas competition organized by AdvantageWest Economic Development Group. The Emerald Plant Group placed 12th and DME Kids placed 15th for their ideas to create value out of a throwaway item and communicate a message of environmental responsibility. Fourteen Western North Carolina colleges and universities and 575 students took the challenge to make something from a plastic bottle.

Silvers Appointed to URTV Board

Pam Silvers, Business Computer Technologies chair, has been appointed to the URTV Board of Directors for a term lasting until July 2010. URTV is the public access television station for Western North Carolina.
