Funding for A-B Tech Foundation scholarships comes from a variety of sources. Nineteen students are featured this month representing 11 different scholarships awarded for the 2008-09 academic year.
Melanie Ashe
Melanie Ashe is a recipient of the Dr. and Mrs. H.D. and Kay Crews Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. "I plan to work at Mission Hospital and pursue my Bachelor of Science Nursing degree as I am working full time as an RN," she wrote. Melanie likes to read, enjoy the beauty of nature, play with her children and enjoy her animals and garden.
Mary Hostetler
Mary Hostetler is a recipient of the Dr. and Mrs. H.D. and Kay Crews Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. She plans to graduate in 2010. "After nursing school, I plan to go on to earn a BSN, and ultimately graduate school, perhaps midwifery," she wrote. Mary's interests are playing outside with her children, painting, reading and playing the piano.
Adam Hutchins
Adam Hutchins is a recipient of the Dr. and Mrs. H.D. and Kay Crews Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. He plans to graduate in 2009. "I would like to continue working with low-income and homeless individuals in meeting their psychiatric and substance abuse treatment needs," he wrote. Adam enjoys outdoor activities with his family, especially swimming and hiking with his son. He also enjoys music and art, and has sculpted and written poetry.
Kathryn Valliere
Kathryn Valliere is a recipient of the Dr. and Mrs. H.D. and Kay Crews Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. She plans to graduate in 2010. "I plan to continue my education in hopes of becoming a nurse practitioner. I plan to work during this time in community nursing, possibly in home health," she wrote. Kathryn loves to garden and do home improvement projects. She also enjoys spending time with friends and extended family.
Natalie Hastings
Natalie Hastings is a recipient of the Hospitality Education Scholarship and is enrolled in the Baking and Pastry Arts program. She plans to graduate in 2009. "I hope to one day own a small bakery," she wrote. Natalie enjoys cooking and gardening. She also loves animals.
Caleb Presnell
Caleb Presnell is a recipient of the Hospitality Education Scholarship and is enrolled in the Culinary Technology program. He plans to graduate in 2009. "I want to work for a while and save up money to travel the world," he wrote. Caleb enjoys all things culinary and advanced science, especially astronomy.
Samantha Matott
Samantha Matott is the recipient of the Hubert Wolfe Memorial Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate in Arts Degree program. She plans to graduate in 2009. "After I graduate, I plan to move in to a four-year university and pursue a degree in history education," she wrote. Samantha enjoys reading, writing, watching movies, and cycling.
Mindy Aiken
Mindy Aiken is the recipient of the Hutchinson/Candler Lions Club Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate in Arts Degree program. She plans to graduate in 2010. "I plan to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry. I have always wanted to travel," she wrote. Mindy loves to go camping, hiking, boating, and hang out with her friends.
Lorelei Scollin
Lorelei Scollin is the recipient of the Iva McGrady Wall Memorial Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Radiography program. She plans to graduate in 2009. "I hope to work in the area at one of the many hospitals. I am working very part time at Mission, so maybe that will lead to a full-time position after graduation," she wrote. Lorelei loves playing with her son, gardening, reading, hiking, and spending time with her family.
Elizabeth Laguna
Elizabeth Laguna is a recipient of the Jan and Lary Schulhof Scholarship and is enrolled in the Medical Sonography program. She plans to graduate in 2009. "After I graduate, I plan to work in a doctor's office in either vascular sonography or obstetrical sonography," she wrote. Elizabeth is very involved in her church and dedicates at least 70 hours a month preaching about the Bible. She also loves reading novels, especially murder mysteries.
Andrew Anderson
Andrew Anderson is a recipient of the Jessie Copp Kramer/Hominy Valley Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Digital Media Technology program. He plans to graduate in 2010. "I would like to earn my digital media degree and then go to film school," he wrote. Andrew enjoys film and skating.
Katie Banks
Katie Banks is a recipient of the Jessie Copp Kramer/Hominy Valley Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Medical Sonography program. She plans to graduate in 2010. "I am going to be an ultrasound technician after two years of education," she wrote. Katie's hobbies are tennis, sports, and spending time with family and friends.
Jeanne Harwood
Jeanne Harwood is a recipient of the Jesse Copp Kramer/Hominy Valley Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Dental Hygiene program. She plans to graduate in 2009. "I plan to take my state dental hygiene boards for Florida to practice down there," she wrote. Jeanne's hobbies include riding motorcycles and spending time with her nieces.
Jessica Morris
Jessica Morris is a recipient of the Jessie Copp Kramer/Hominy Valley Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. She plans to graduate in 2009. "I plan to begin working as a nurse soon after graduation and gain experience in critical and intensive care units. I also want to work toward completing a bachelor's degree. My ultimate goal is obtaining a master's in nurse anesthesia," she wrote. Jessica enjoys reading, mountain biking, shopping, and hiking.
Emily Brooks
Emily Brooks is the recipient of a Joe and Janice Brumit Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Baking and Pastry Arts program. She plans to graduate in 2010. "After I graduate, I plan to work in the baking industry," she wrote. Emily enjoys spending time with her family, reading, baking and cooking.
Thomas Parker
Thomas Parker is the recipient of the John and Leona Graham Scholarship and is enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program. He plans to graduate in 2010. "While I am in school, I will probably work, as needed, as a CNA, but upon completion I will work as an RN in an emergency room setting," he wrote. Thomas likes to spend time with his wife and four children, and hopes to give more attention to his faith and his family.
Hunter DeBruhl
Hunter DeBruhl is the recipient of the Joseph Dave Engineering Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Civil Engineering Technology program. He plans to graduate in 2009. "After graduating, I plan on applying for a job at a local engineering firm or at a local construction company," he wrote. Hunter has a great interest in U.S. History and enjoys Civil War reenacting.
Franklin Pearce III
Franklin Pearce III is a recipient of the Johnathan Giardina Memorial Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Emergency Medical Science program. He plans to graduate in 2009. "I plan to go to work full time as a paramedic in Buncombe County," he wrote. Franklin's hobbies are studying and fitness.
Brent DeLac
Brent DeLac is a recipient of the Johnathan Giardina Memorial Endowed Scholarship and is enrolled in the Emergency Medical Science program. He plans to graduate in 2010. "I plan to work as a paramedic hopefully in West Asheville," he wrote.
