Lorraine Silverman, adjunct math instructor, received the 2008 Faculty Access Award from Annie Clingenpeel, Disability Services Coordinator/Student Success Advocate.
Lorraine Silverman, adjunct math instructor, received the 2008 Faculty Access Award for her show of support to students with disabilities.
Started in 2004, the Faculty Access Award is given to a faculty member who has demonstrated commitment to creating a climate that fosters success for all students on campus.
The following are comments made by students about Silverman:
"Mrs. Silverman was very approachable, patient and understanding of her students. She was very thorough in answering questions and explaining any problem we had. She did not overwhelm us...she is a great asset to your institution!"
"Mrs. Silverman took a student who basically failed miserably in geometry and pre-Algebra over 30 years ago (closer to 35-40) and turned them into an A-student. Why? Because I hated the stuff when I was young-- but she made it fun and exciting. I was even able to finish with a flourish in the last two to three weeks because she had helped me to achieve a winning attitude (at least in math) in spite of a lot of hardship. All I can say is 'Go, Lorraine, go!' Thank you!"
"She worked patiently with me and helped me get through my math courses. She also informed me about the Disability Services available at A-B Tech."
Each year, the Disability Services Office sends a letter to all students served the previous year to obtain nominations. Students choose a faculty member based on the person's show of support to students with disabilities, developing support in the classroom, delivering accommodations in a respectful manner, assuring confidentiality, challenging students academically, and/or being a good role model.
Other nominees for this year's award were: Dr. Joseph Fox, Business Administration chair; Linda Burke, Disabilities Services Specialist/Student Success Advocate; Kathie Doole, Business Computer Technologies instructor; Carol Douglas, Student Success Advocate; Sonia Brooks, Basic Skills instructor; Kathy Toler, Marketing and Retail instructor; Miguel Harney, Spanish instructor; Karen Pauly, Basic Skills instructor; Ron Layne, Developmental Studies instructor; Jean Leichte, Basic Skills instructor; Rhonda Wood, Administrative/Medical Systems instructor; Hilda Caldwell, Learning Resources adjunct instructor; Peter Carswell, Social/Behavioral Sciences instructor; and Dielle Ciesco, Basic Skills instructor.
The recipient of the Faculty Access Award is recognized with a plaque presented at the Student Services Holiday Party in December. Another plaque is displayed in the lobby of Ferguson Auditorium showing annual recipients' names.
