Transportation Technologies Instructors Kevin Fletcher and David Myers volunteered to fix a van for the Daniel Boone Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
Bill Goacher, an executive board member for the Daniel Boone Council of the Boy Scouts of America, approached Transportation Technologies Instructors Kevin Fletcher and David Myers about the possibility of making repairs on a scout van.
The 15-passenger van was a donation from Mountain Mobility and has handicapped access. "Of course we told him 'yes.' We rebuilt the front suspension system so the van could pass inspection. They could not afford to have the repairs made. The students did all the work as a class, while we supervised everything that was done," Fletcher said. The labor invested in the repairs was valued at $1,329 and took about four weeks to complete.
Fletcher and Myers had the same group of students in their classes for the morning and evening during the summer semester. "We even had some high school students working on the van," Myers said. "We checked the heating and air, how it was running, did some belt work, did performance testing, and went over it in general."
"This van serves dens and troops in underserved areas where volunteers are simply not available, as well as a resource for handicapped youths to get to camps and to participate in area activities," said Connie Bowes, Scout Executive. "The professionalism and unstinting willingness of David and Kevin to help is part of why A-B Tech is held in such high esteem by the community."
