Anita Metcalf
Anita Metcalf, Foundation Executive Director and College Relations Vice President, received the Outstanding Fundraising Executive Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals of WNC during the 18th Annual National Philanthropy Day Awards Nov. 18 at the Renaissance Hotel.
Foundation Development Officer Jimmie Cochran Pratt nominated Metcalf, and David Bailey, President/CEO of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County submitted a letter of support.
"I have been fortunate to work with Anita in her current role at A-B Tech and while she served with Buncombe County government. Her enthusiasm, fundraising knowledge and personal attributes have made her a successful professional and fund development executive," Bailey wrote.
Metcalf has overseen an increase in funds for the Foundation from $150,000 in 2001, when she first came to A-B Tech, to more than $5 million. That same year, the Foundation awarded six student scholarships compared to 176 for the 2008-09 academic year.
Metcalf is a member of AFP, the Council for Resource Development and the North Carolina Council of Officers for Resource Development. She is a community volunteer, having served on boards including United Way of Asheville, United Way Campaign Cabinet, Buncombe County Department of Social Services, Baptist Hospitals Board of Trustees, Industries for the Blind, Leadership Asheville Forum, and Asheville-Buncombe VISION. She is a member of the Children's Welfare League, the Candler Lions Club, and the Adopt-A-Highway Program and a founding member of the Enka Schools Foundation.
Criteria for the award include examples of leadership that is effective, creative and has resulted in funding for a project, organization, or community initiative, and evidence of commitment to the profession and to philanthropy through voluntary service and financial support of nonprofit or independent organizations.
National Philanthropy Day, founded in 1986, is set aside each November by an official act of Congress. Its purpose is to commemorate and pay tribute to the contributions philanthropy has made to personal lives, local communities, and the nation. The Western North Carolina Chapter of AFP honored individuals and groups, who thorough their hard work and dedication, have enhanced philanthropy in the area.

The State Board of Community Colleges established the Distinguished Partners for Excellence Award in 2005. The award recognizes an exemplary employer, business, or industry group that has demonstrated decisive involvement and a firm commitment to the professional development of its employees and/or to the development of North Carolina's workforce through its partnership efforts with one or more of the 58 community colleges in the North Carolina Community College System. Two business/college partnerships are recognized each year.
A-B Tech was closely involved in the recruitment and negotiation of Volvo locating a new production line at its Asheville facility. The addition led to the retention of more than 260 existing jobs and will bring 300 new jobs into Buncombe County. "We look to A-B Tech as our first source to provide for our training needs," said Allison Moses, Volvo Vice President and General Manager.
