Tech Notes

Art Museum Passes Available

Free Asheville Art Museum passes are available for employees and students. They can be reserved for up to a week in advance for a one-week checkout, based on availability. There is a limit of six passes per person. A set of 25 passes is also available for instructors to take a class. Contact Sue Donato at Ext. 7572 or sdonato@abtech.edu for more information.

Buckner Co-Produces Play For SART

Dr. Connie Buckner, Madison Site director, and her husband Jack Davis co-produced the Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre's production of Evita, which ran from Aug. 6 - 24 at the theater in Mars Hill. They produced the show with Fred and Phyllis Young.

Culinary Technology Instructor Featured In Times News

Chef Scott Adams, adjunct Culinary Technology instructor, was featured on the front page of the Hendersonville Times News Sept. 9 as first runner-up for casual cuisine for the state in the Best Dish in N.C. contest. Adams is the chef at Blackwater Grill in Hendersonville. The article also featured Chef David Sparancio of La Riserva in Hendersonville, who has served as a mentor to many A-B Tech co-op students. He was the first runner-up in the fine dining category.

deVries Recipe Featured In Winston-Salem Journal

Charles deVries, Culinary Arts and Hospitality Instructor, was asked to submit his recipe for succes to the Recipe Swap column in the Winston-Salem Journal. The recipe published Aug. 27 is for a torte with a combination of meringue, buttercream, almond praline and a chocolate coating, Succes was a dessert deVries made when he was the pastry chef at La Chaudiere, a French restaurant that used to be in Winston-Salem.

Ferezan Accepts Seat On WCQS Board

Jeff Ferezan, Vice President of College Initiatives, has been elected to the WCQS Board for a three-year term beginning Oct. 1. He will be eligible to serve two terms for the public broadcast radio station.

Former Student Gives Compliments

Former student Stephen Williams recently told Jennifer Browning, English/Communications Instructor, how much he appreciated all the help he received at A-B Tech. "He talked particularly about how good a job Student Services did for him while he was here. He said everyone at A-B Tech showed him how much they cared about his success, everyone gave him consistent answers and at A-B Tech he felt like he was treated like a king," Browning wrote.

Wangler Wins Tomato Festival

Justin Wangler, a 1998 A-B Tech Culinary Technology graduate, won first place at the Kendall-Jackson Wine Estate's Heirloom Tomato Festival. Wangler, executive chef for Kendall-Jackson, also was invited to prepare dinner at the James Beard House in New York on Sept. 18. This will be Wangler's second time to receive that honor.

Early College Receives Computers

Madison Early College received a donation of 46 computers from Mission Hospital after the hospital updated a section of one of its buildings. The computers are being used to establish a computer lab and for two smaller labs in the Math and English classrooms at Early College.

Mapes Accepted Into Leadership Program

Toby Mapes, Biotechnology Chair, has been accepted into the 2008-09 North Carolina Community College Leadership Program. The statewide program was developed 19 years ago to provide leadership training to faculty and staff from state community colleges. Participants were selected through a competitive application process. Mapes will join 37 other participants over the next six months for workshops and seminars.

Phlebotomy Instructors Go Extra Mile

Phlebotomy student Beverly Reece wrote a note of appreciation for the assistance she received from Melissa Hyatt, Medical Laboratory Technology Chair, and Monique Worley, Phlebotomy Instructor. "I have been under a doctor's care since Sept. 15," Reece wrote. "Melissa and Monique have made arrangements to keep me updated on my class material and have been very patient with me. These two instructors are what makes our learning worthwhile."
