Annie Clingenpeel, Disabilities Services coordinator, received the Pat Bailey Award for Disabilities Professional of the Year by the North Carolina Association of Higher Education and Disability.
A-B Tech's Cosmetology program received a grade of 99 out of 100 on its state board inspection. Inspectors come to the College unannounced at least four times a year for sanitation inspections. The North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners checks the students' kits and implements for cleanliness, in addition to instructors' records for student hours and performance.
Brian Cid of Cid Investigations, LLC sent an e-mail to Skye Myrick, Emergency Services Academy associate dean, thanking her for the response to his request for the Protective Security firearms class. "I thought it would take much longer to have a class request initiated. I wanted to let you know what an outstanding job Keith Rice (adjunct instructor) did at the firearms training course," Cid wrote. "He is a great representative of your college. Keith was engaging and professional at all times. I was impressed with how supportive and encouraging he was with one of the students that was a new shooter who had not fired a night fire course before."
Carol Fleming, Director of Library Services, was honored during the YWCA's 17th annual Tribute to Women of Influence (TWIN) Awards banquet. The purpose of the TWIN event is to honor women who have made significant contributions in their fields, and to recognize those organizations that support such achievements.
The Small Business Center will host its annual Small Business Jump Start Day from 4 to 7 p.m. April 17 in the Haynes Conference Center on the Enka Campus. This free event allows current and potential business owners an opportunity to gain valuable information on a variety of topics related to starting and running a business. More than 60 vendors will be available to talk with the public about such topics as advertising, taxes, business plans, financing, technology, human resources and more. A-B Tech's 19 Radiography graduates had a 100 percent pass rate on the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam with an average score of 91.2. The national average grade was 84.7 and the North Carolina average was 87.1 for the exam. ARRT exams assess the knowledge and cognitive skills typically required of a staff technologist for performance of major tasks.
A-B Tech Welding Technology graduate Hadley Sinclair was selected as a Welding Engineering Research Assistant at Ohio State University. She wrote an e-mail to instructor Charlie Farmer thanking him for his help. "I just wanted to share the good news with you since I knew you'd get a kick out of it, plus I still appreciate everything you did for me when I was at A-B Tech."
Dave White, director of Research and Planning, has been elected as Western Regional director of the Community College Planning and Research Organization by a unanimous vote of his peers.
Russ Yelton, executive director of Entrepreneurial Ventures and Business Incubation, has been elected vice president of the North Carolina Business Incubation Association for 2008. The non-profit organization was formed to support business incubators and economic developers by providing the information, education, advocacy and networking resources to bring excellence to the process of assisting early-stage companies.
