Culinary Team Shines At Regional Competition

A-B Tech's student culinary team was awarded second place in the Southeast Regional American Culinary Federation Hot Food competition in Williamsburg, Va.

The A-B Tech team won a silver medal and had a score of 33.05. The first-place team from Georgia also received a silver medal.

"The judging was very tough. Many people, including judges, came up to our team to congratulate them on the outstanding job they did," said Chef Charles deVries.

Team members are Michael Aanonsen, Matt Gruber, Anna McClintock, Travis McCloud, Shannon Ginn, and Ronnie Bowers. They were coached by deVries and Chef John Hofland.

"We are very proud of our culinary program. Hospitality Education has enjoyed outstanding leadership from department chairs over the years," said Ned Fowler, interim vice president of Instructional Services. "The success of our students and graduates is the best reflection of the leadership of the chairs and the dedication of the outstanding faculty."

Daniel Gorman, a 2007 Culinary Technology graduate, was a runner-up in the Young Culinarian of the Year competition and as competed as a member of the Georgia team because he works for the Cherokee Town and Country Club in Atlanta. Chef Tim Thomas, CEC, a 1988 A-B Tech graduate, was a finalist in the Chef of the Year competition.
