College Purchases New Ambulance with Allied Health Grant

A-B Tech Ambulance

A-B Tech recently bought a new critical care ambulance from the Allied Health Necessary Innovations grant to train curriculum and continuing education EMS students.

A-B Tech's Emergency Medical Science program recently took delivery on a fully-equipped 2008 Freightliner ambulance funded by the Allied Health Necessary Innovations grant from the North Carolina Community College System.

"This is very important to the College," said Keith Owens, Emergency Medical Science chair. "What a student can learn with the ambulance is not something you can sit in the classroom and simulate. It makes it realistic."

The ambulance, equipped with a critical care package, matches industry standards. Mission Hospitals use the same type of ambulance. It features a walkway that allows passage from the front of the cabin to the patient area, and a back-up camera. "For students learning to drive, it helps them to visualize what is behind them. It will be useful for training," Owens said.

The 1992 ambulance the College previously used is no longer road safe, much smaller, and out-of-date with today's health care transport needs. The new ambulance will allow for more students to train effectively.

EMS students in curriculum and continuing education courses will benefit from the state-of-the-art ambulance starting in the spring semester. "Part of EMS training is emergency vehicle operation," Owens said. "We will have patient scenario training where students will drive to our ball field, locate a (simulated) patient, stabilize, and then transport the patient."

A-B Tech has one of the largest EMS program in Western North Carolina, providing training for 55-60 curriculum and hundreds of continuing education students annually.
