Send in Your Staff Person of the Year Nominations

Nominations are being sought for the 2005-06 Staff Person of the Year for A-B Tech through March 13.

The individual selected for this honor will be recognized at graduation in August and will receive a monetary honorarium. The Staff Person of the Year will automatically be entered in the Staff Award competition through the North Carolina Community College System.

Staff members who have been full-time with A-B Tech for at least three years are eligible.

This person should be someone who really goes above and beyond, makes extra effort to be invitational to students and other employees, works on committees to make the A-B Tech community better, and is an ambassador of A-B Tech to the Western North Carolina community.

A-B Tech faculty, staff, students, or alumni may submit nominations. Applications will be available on the website at www.abtech.edu. If you have questions or need a nomination form, call Rebecca Howell, Ext. 441 or e-mail rhowell@abtech.edu.

Spelling Bee at A-B Tech to Benefit Literacy Council

A-B Tech will host the 16th Annual Altrusa Literacy Spelling Bee at 7 p.m. March 13 in Ferguson Auditorium to benefit the Literacy Council of Buncombe County. The snow date will be March 27.

The event is open to the public and free of charge although donations are suggested, as all proceeds benefit the Literacy Council. Contributions may be made to the Spirit Boxes, which show support of a particular team.

Contestants will participate in teams of three and compete for prizes donated from local businesses. A reception for participants and the audience will be held during intermission.

A-B Tech will have a team with Mary McClurkin, a former English instructor at A-B Tech; Ruth Shackelton, wife of retired instructor John Shackelton; and Judith Sides. Martha Ball, communications specialist, will serve as an alternate.

Other participating teams come from a variety of local high schools, businesses, corporations and organizations including WOXL, Asheville City Schools,Laurey's Catering, Mountain Xpress and Wachovia.

The mission of the Literacy Council of Buncombe County is to improve basic education and English language skills of area adults by providing them with one-on-one and small group tutoring by trained volunteers. The Council started in 1992 as a result of a merger between the Altrusa Literacy Council and the Asheville-Buncombe County Literacy Council. Since beginning the Spelling Bee in 1990, Altrusa of Asheville, with the help of the community, has raised over $130,000 for literacy.

Decorative Restoration Class Hosts Elementary Students

Tim Hanlon's Decorative Restoration class, shares paints, stencils and sponges with Harriet Detweiler's Intensive Intervention class from Hall Fletcher Elementary School. The younger students were able to create art with one-on-one assistance from A-B Tech students during a visit Feb. 16.
