Foundation Scholarship Recipient Profiles

Funding for A-B Tech Foundation Scholarships comes from a variety of sources, and this month's featured students have each benefited from the Grace Joan Love Schneider Endowed Scholarship for $1,200.

Amber Aderhold

Amber Aderhold

Amber Aderhold is currently a General Occupational Technology student with aspirations of entering either the Associate Nursing Degree program or Surgical Technology. "I like working with people and being very interactive," she wrote in her scholarship essay. "I also like helping people. It's going to be tough being a full-time student and pursuing a new career, but I know in my heart that I can do it, and there is nothing I am ruling out because I don't think I have the 'smarts' or the time to do it."

Deanna Buchanan

Deanna Buchanan

Deanna Buchanan plans on graduating with an Early Childhood/Teacher Associate degree in the summer. She had worked one-on-one with special needs students, as a temporary assistant teacher in a Head Start classroom. "Falling in love with this career possibility, and realizing what I wanted to do the rest of my life, led me to pursuing a college education," she wrote. After she receives her associate's degree she wants to transfer to a four-year college and earn a bachelor's degree in teaching.

John Davis

John "Chip" Davis

John "Chip" Davis is a Culinary Technology student and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. "Even though I loved food, I didn't want to become a professional cook. It never really crossed my mind," he wrote. "Now almost 10 years and four sous chef positions later, I have come to realize that I have a knack for cooking. I once wanted to be the owner of a large restaurant and bar, but as I have matured I have realized that I would be happiest eventually owning a small restaurant where I can be involved with all aspects of the business."

Amanda Looney

Amanda Looney

Amanda Looney plans to graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice Technology in the spring. She has been recognized on the President's List and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Once she finishes at A-B Tech, she plans to transfer to Western Carolina University to receive her bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, and then earn a master's from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. "I have thought about trying for the Federal Bureau of Investigation or another government agency where I am able to use my degrees to further my career," she wrote.

Nicole O'Leary

Nichole O'Leary

Nichole O'Leary is a student in the Criminal Justice Technology program after returning to college in summer 2004. She has been named to the President's List and has been named to the National Dean's List. "My immediate education goal at this time is to receive my associate's degree in Criminal Justice. If I can find a way to continue my education from there I fully intend to do so," she wrote. "I do know I want to use my education to be employed in the criminal justice field, as a civilian."

Charles Worley

Charles Worley

Charles Worley had been employed at Square D for 27 years and had intended to retire with the company, when his job ended. "Suddenly, at 47 years of age, I found myself unemployed and returning to school under the NAFTA program," he wrote. Worley is enrolled in the Heavy Equipment and Transport Technology program. "I anticipate graduating in 2006 at age 49. It is then my intention to seek employment, using the skills learned, in a position that offers benefits and long term earning potential, as I intend to retire from the same company, if at all possible."

Praise From Student

Student Michael Harris had this praise about A-B Tech in his First-Year Seminar class.

"College has definitely changed me for the better. I feel like I am doing something with my life and I have found machining to really be something I like a lot. I get up each morning knowing I am going to learn something new, and before A-B Tech, I didn't feel this way."

Phlebotomy Program Reaccredited

A-B Tech's Phlebotomy program has been reaccredited for four years by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

A-B Tech is one of two area community colleges that offers phlebotomy as a certificate program, which means students are able to take the national certification exam after completing 100 clinical hours and 100 successful, unassisted blood draws.
