Artwork Selected For Exhibit

Dream

Haruka Shikauchi's painting, "Dream," has also been selected for the NCCCS art display. Shikauchi is a graduate of A-B Tech's Decorative Restoration program.

Artwork created by staff and a former student of A-B Tech has been chosen for display in the North Carolina Community College System's annual art exhibit at the System Office in Raleigh.

Martin Lancaster, President of the NCCCS, selected six pieces from A-B Tech for inclusion in the exhibit to open March 17 and run through the end of 2005.

"A-B Tech has had an excellent selection of work in every one of these exhibitions. We particularly appreciate the efforts of (Learning Resources Center Director) Shirley McLaughlin in encouraging submissions from A-B Tech and the support of President Ray Bailey. A-B Tech serves an area blessed with one of our state's most vibrant creative communities, and we are just delighted that so many artists are willing to share their work with us," Lancaster said.

Pat Freeman, the NCCCS Western Region Economic Director, submitted a color photo titled "Lotus Flower" for the show. Adjunct Instructor Martha Mitchell's piece is leaded glass titled "View From My Window."

View From My Window

Martha Mitchell, adjunct instructor, submitted leaded glass titled "View From My Window" to the NCCCS art exhibit.

Quilts by Janice Maddox, adjunct instructor, titled "A Glimpse of Spring" and "Wispers," will be on display along with pieces by Haruka Shikauchi, a graduate of the Decorative Restoration program. Shikauchi's work includes an oil painting on canvas, "Martian Moon," and an acrylic painting titled "Dream."

The artwork is displayed in the hallways, conference rooms, executive suites and other public spaces throughout the six-story Caswell Building, headquarters for the North Carolina Community College System. The building is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays with tours available for public visitors.

Nearly 150 pieces, representing about 50 community colleges across the state, will be showcased. These include paintings, quilts and other fiber art, sculpture, pottery, baskets, photography and stained glass.

A Glimpse of Spring

Adjunct Instructor Janice Maddox's quilt, "A Glimpse of Spring," will be on display at the North Carolina Community College System main office starting March 17.

The exhibit was the idea of President Lancaster, who asked that it be organized right after he took office in 1997. President Lancaster personally selects every piece in the show. His goals for the exhibition are to provide an attractive and stimulating environment for the employees and visitors of the System Office and to showcase the quality and variety of talent at work in North Carolina's community colleges.
