Many of you have been talking about our new system and the conversion process. We realize that there are quite a few questions floating around out there. Maybe you have a question, but you don't know who to ask. Starting next month, we will use TechTalk to give you timely information and answer your specific questions.

So, what do you want to know? Send your questions to David McKinney via email and we'll get busy with the answers. And, to place that sub order...

Tomato Trees?

Judy Borum displays her unique tomatoes.

Continuing Education Secretary Judy Borum displays the tomatoes she grew from plants given away earlier this year by Biology Instructor Joe Allawos. "Lynne Gabai, Skye Myrick, and I mixed the varieties, so I'm not sure what types I ended up with," Judy said. "All I know is that some of the plants themselves are bigger than any I have ever seen! ... This was our first attempt at raising tomatoes from seedlings - pretty successful results, don't you think?"

Rogersville, TN Retiree Returns To Alma Mater To Say Thanks

George Becker of Rogersville, TN, hadn't visited A-B Tech since his graduation from the drafting and design technology program in 1966. But when he found himself in Asheville recently, he decided it was time to stop by and say thanks.

Retired from a job as senior manufacturing engineer at TRW Automotive, Becker remembers drafting and design as "a tough program." "Thirty-five of us started out, and five graduated, and I was number 5 ...," he recalled with a laugh. "I think that's what prepared us to go into industry and do a good job. ... I worked at several different places and when I first started, I was working with guys with engineering degrees, and they didn't have a clue about what I learned at A-B Tech."

Becker, who came by the College during a visit to a relative in a local hospital, marveled at the changes that had occurred on campus in the years since his graduation. "It's grown so much, and I'm proud to see it," he said. "It's a wonderful school. ... It really helped me."

Shuttle Launch

The new Shuttle System to help students get around on campus.

One of the 15-passenger vans used by the Security Office for the college's new shuttle service prepares to make another trip around the Asheville Campus during the first week of fall semester. The vans run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and make stops at seven locations. Students also may flag a driver for an unscheduled stop. The service is designed to make getting around campus more convenient for students who park in outlying lots.

'Your Success Is My Success'

Adjunct Biology Instructor Russ Palmeri, MD recently wrote to state Rep. Susan Fisher to thank her for making time for a campus tour and to tell her about his experience as an instructor here. "I've been a student and a teacher at Georgetown University Medical School and Residency Programs and at UC Berkeley, among other institutions. I must say, however, I've never been anywhere where the education of the student was a higher priority than at A-B Tech," he said.

"Unlike some institutions, where research and graduate study are the focus, and the undergraduates an afterthought, ALL the efforts of the faculty and administration of A-B Tech are devoted to the success of the student. With the rapidly changing job environment, A-B Tech is uniquely poised to propel its students forward. I tell my students, 'Your success is my success.'"
