
Vernon Daugherty, Engineering and Applied Technology dean, was served as a judge for the 2009 Sustainable N.C. Awards. Sustainable North Carolina (SNC) is accelerating the adoption of principles and practices that optimize economic prosperity, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship throughout thestate. Current programs include an annual conference, awards recognition program, and the NC Sustainable Business Council.
Pamela Silvers, Business Computer Technologies chair, and Veronica Dooly, Business Computer Technologies instructor, presented at the National Career Tech Prep conference Oct. 2 in Atlanta. The topic of their presentation was "That's Not What I Signed Up For: Teaching College Classes to High School Students." The presentation included information developed from a Perkins Grant they received in 2008-09.
A-B Tech's Alpha Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, is seeking acts for the fourth annual Helpmate Talent Show at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13 in the College's Ferguson auditorium.
Interested participants should send an e-mail stating their talent to ptkofficers@abtech.edu in order to register. This is a family-friendly event and performers will be required to sign a contract stating the act will be content appropriate. Acts are judged by audience voting.
Admission is free and doors open at 6 p.m. Pizza, soda and brownies will be for sale and there will be a raffle directly after the show. All of the proceeds from the sales will go directly to Helpmate, a shelter for battered women and children within our community. Last year's show raised $500 and Phi Theta Kappa is hoping to double the total this year.
As a part of Alpha Upsilon Eta of Phi Theta Kappa chapter's efforts to capitalize on their enthusiasm and experience from the International Honors Institute in Richmond, Va., the have instituted a faculty lecture series on the Honor Topic, The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences.
The first lecture, by Allison Stinson, Psychology instructor was Sept. 28 titled "If Money Can Buy Happiness, Maybe I Just Don't Know Where to Shop." The next faculty lecturers will be Dr. Dennis King, vice president of Student Services and Barbara Brownsmith, Instructional designer, at 7:15 p.m. Nov. 2 in Sycamore Room 201. Everyone is welcome. The topic for the panel discussion will be The Paradox of Affluence in Education.
A-B Tech instructors Kelly McEnany and Valerie Watts attended the 12th annual World View Symposium on "21st Century Skills for the Global Economy" Oct. 14-15 in Chapel Hill. Participants took part in small group sessions on curriculum-based global education resources for a variety of subject areas and grade levels.
This year's program was co-sponsored by the North Carolina State Board of Education, the Department of Public Instruction, the Center for International Understanding, and UNC's Schools of Education and Business (CIBER).
