A-B Tech employees selected for NCCCS art show

North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) President H. Martin Lancaster has selected four pieces of artwork by A-B Tech employees for the NCCCS' annual art exhibit. Beginning in March, Derrick Tickle's color photo 'Soaring over the Blue Ridge Mountains' (below), Linda Davis' stained glass 'Apple Jacks' (above), Shirley McLaughlin's stained glass 'Iris' and Madalyn Rogers' 'Vesperbild' Pastel on Paper, will be part of a exhibition displayed throughout the NCCCS Raleigh office. The artwork will be unveiled at a reception for the artists at the Caswell Building March 20 and will remain on display until Dec. 31. The exhibit will be promoted to statewide, regional and national media.Return to top

Mission: The mission of the Culinary Technology program is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and skills essential for success in entry-level positions meeting the professional standards and growing demands of the culinary industry.

Highlights: Over the last five years, all graduates seeking in-field employment secured jobs.

Culinary competition awards are many; including

  • North Carolina State Junior Hot Food Competition, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 (gold medals)
  • American Culinary Federation Southeast Regional Hot Food/Skills Awards, 1996 (silver medal), 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 (gold medals)
  • Charlotte Cold Food Salon - medaled every year since beginning of show
  • Atlanta Cold Food 1995 (gold medal)
  • North Carolina Restaurant Association Junior Hot Food Competition, First Place, 1998
  • Student represented American Culinary Federation at World Junior Chef Challenge, Auckland, New Zealand, 1999
  • Silver Medal at American Culinary Federation National Junior Hot Food Competition, 1997, making the A-B Tech team one of the "Top Four" nationally
  • Graduate on the National Culinary Olympic Team 1992, 1996

Arts Class Heads for Europe

Arts and humanities students at A-B Tech will open the doors to St. Peter's Basilica instead of a book in May. Instructors at A-B Tech are taking their class to France and Italy next term to learn art and humanities first hand. A-B Tech is offering the college-credit trip to Europe beginning May 30 for 10 days. The trip is also open to the general public. Price is based on the number of participants and includes airfare, eight overnight stays in hotels, breakfast and dinner, and a bilingual tour director. Remarkable Women Unite

Gwen Ashburn, literature professor at UNC-Asheville, will speak on "A Confluence of Remarkable Women" Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. in Ferguson Auditorium. The program is part of a speaker series in conjunction with the Smithsonian exhibit "Serving Home and Community: Women of Southern Appalachia," on display at Smith-McDowell House Museum Feb. 8-April 6. Admission is free.

VLC Receives Additional Funds

A-B Tech's David Smith, Coordinator for the Virtual Learning Community (VLC) Arts and Sciences Development Center, was notified Jan. 21 by state project director Neal Hollands that the Center would receive an additional $2,000 from the VLC Board. The additional amount was granted on the basis of the number of courses successfully on task for completion by the May deadline. Return to top
