Solarplate: Printmaking using the Sun

Kenn Kotara, painter, sculptor, installation artist, printmaker, graphic designer and teacher, has had an artistic curiosity since early childhood. Always working in various media, the unfolding narrative of Kotara’s work continues to evolve in his contemplative and reflective observations. He has taught at A-B Tech Community College, Blue Ridge Community College and UNCA. Kotara’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Asheville Art Museum, Louisiana State Museum, Masur Museum, U.S. Embassy (Jamaica), Bellagio (Las Vegas), Sumisho (Tokyo), and Western Asset Management (Sao Paulo). His work has been included in over 100 exhibitions including Sandler Hudson Gallery (Atlanta), Thomas Werner Gallery (New York), Knoxville Museum of Art, Urban Institute of Contemporary Art (Grand Rapids),Weatherspoon Museum of Art, Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien (Berlin), and Gallery Meepyung

This three-day workshop focuses on the Solarplate* printmaking process using photopolymer plates, which are sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light. Using the sun, we will develop relief and intaglio Solarplates as the vehicle to transfer an image to paper. Additional techniques will be explored along with reworking prints through drawing and painting to create unique impressions. This workshop is for all levels of artists interested in making prints using the safer and greener methods of etching without the use of acid solvents or grounds.

Students should bring the following items to the workshop:

  • Drawing & painting materials and tools including brushes, pens, markers, knives, straight edges
  • Stabilo 8046 pencils
  • Black India Ink
  • Caran d'ache water soluble crayons (purchase individually or by the box)
  • Printing paper (BFK Rives, medium or heavy weight, or similar)
  • Small plates, 5x7, 8X10 & 9x12, will be emphasized in this workshop. It is suggested that you order multiple plates of the same size. Plates may be ordered through instructor 3 weeks prior to the workshop, or order individually.
  • Acetate, mylar or transparencies, glass plates (the size you plan working on) preferably, blank films, unless you use photography based images. Glass plates should be at least 1/ 4 inch thick and a little larger than the plate size polished edges.
