Foundation Golf Tournament Celebrates Seventh Year

The seventh A-B Tech Foundation K. Ray Bailey Invitational Golf Classic held June 4 at Mount Mitchell Golf Club raised more than $36,000 for student scholarships.

“In this difficult economic time, folks saw the need to step forward to help our students while enjoying a day of camaraderie,” said Mike Ray, tournament committee chair.

Mark Kopp won the putting contest. Brian Guengerich grabbed the longest drive for the men, while Joann Yoder shot the longest drive for the women. The closest to the pin contest winners were Scott Pritchard (hole #2), Ray Deaver (#6), Greg Moser (#11) and Dave White (#15).

First-place gross team winner was Clean Environments with members Stan Cannon, David DeVane, Harry Patton and Chris Young.

First-place net team winner was Bowers, Ellis & Watson, P.A. with members K. Ray Bailey, John Ellis, Mike Watson and Bruce Goforth.

Second-place gross team winner was Holston Gases with members Phil Blake, Mark Kopp, Randy McKinney and Stuart Smith.

Second-place net team winner was PSNC & Wachovia with members Latrella McElrath, Lee McElrath, Greg Reynolds and Robby Russell.

Third-place gross team winner was Advanced Business Equipment with members Tom Crouch, Ryan Guthy, Kevin Jackson and Lanel Vaughn.

Third-place net team winner was Hart Funeral Service with members Joey Gillis, Darryl Hart,Therian Robinson and Lee Shepard.

The mission of the Foundation is to support A-B Tech in all of its programs and activities to ensure that quality educational opportunities are available to its students, faculty and staff. The Foundation was able to award seven golf tournament scholarships and awarded a total of 257 scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year.
