Art

Vadim Bora Visual Art Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2011 by the staff of the A-B Tech Art Department.  It is awarded to students enrolled in the Associate of Fine Arts Degree program with a concentration in Art or the Associate of Arts Education Pre-Major.



Automotive Systems

Fred Anderson Automotive Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2012.  It provides financial support to students enrolled in the Automotive Technology program at A-B Tech.

Business Education

A-B Tech Opportunity Fund Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Tom and Nancy Maher.  It is awarded to deserving students enrolled in Business Administration and Hospitality Education programs.  Preference is given to students enrolled in the Entrepreneurship program.

Business Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in the following programs in the Business Administration department: Accounting, Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Retailing and Human Resource Management.

Carol Paxton Memorial Endowed BCT Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Carol Paxton, who taught computer courses at A-B Tech.  It is awarded to students enrolled in Buisness Administration or Computer Information Technology program.

Eaton Corporation Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established in 2005.  It is awarded to students who are interested in pursuing careers in engineering, manufacturing, or business.Eaton Corporation is a power management company with a local company in Asheville. Eaton has approximately 102,000 employees and sells products to customers in more than 175 countries.

James T. "J. T." Rice, Sr. Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2014 by James T. "Tommy" Rice, Jr., Vice President and General Manager of Anders-Rice Funeral Home.  Mr. Rice established this scholarship in memory of his father, James T. "J. T." Rice, Sr., former President of Anders-Rice Funeral Home.   It is awarded to students enrolled in the Business Administration program.

Quality Education Scholarship

This scholarship provides scholarship assistance to students enrolled in the Business Administration program.

Square D Endowed Scholarship

This endowment provides scholarships for students enrolled in any Business Administration and Engineering Technology program. Square D was a local American manufacturer of equipment used to control and distribute electric power.  The company also made disconnect switches, both fused, and unfused, as well as HACR (Heating Air Conditioning and Refrigeration) rated switch boxes that held an HACR breaker for use as a disconnect.

SSC Service Solutions Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2012.  It is awarded to students enrolled and pursuing a degree in Business Administration. With over 40 years of industry experience and highly trained skilled professionals, SSC specializes in enhancing learning environments through exceptional Custodial & Campus Services, Plant Operations & Maintenance, and Grounds Management.

Telco Community Credit Union Social Media

Established in 2013, by Telco Community Credit Union, this scholarship is provided to second-year students enrolled in Business, Marketing or Computer Information Technology programs.  The recipient will be a "Junior" Board Member of the Credit Union Board of Directors and attend quarterly meetings and will assist with managing the Credit Union's social media and promotions and membership.

The PLI Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2014 by employees at Plasticard-Locktech International (PLI). PLI is the world's largest keycard manufacturer and leading specialty printer. This scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in the Business Administration and Engineering programs.



Construction Management

Deltec Homes Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established in 2007.  It is awarded to students enrolled in the Construction Management program. The company that eventually became Deltec Homes was founded by Clyde Kinser in 1955 as Kinser Home Insulation of Asheville. Today, Deltec specializes in primary family residences.

William and Dorothy Tugman Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2004, in honor of William and Dorothy Tugman.  It is awarded to students enrolled in the Construction Management Program.  Preference is given to students who have completed the GED program and minority students (women, Latinos, African-American).



Culinary

Asheville Independent Restaurant "Chefs of Tomorrow" (AIR) Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2007 by the Asheville’s Independent Restaurant Association (AIR). It is awarded to students to students enrolled in the Culinary Arts program. The mission of  AIR  is to unite the independent restaurant community of Asheville NC as committed to local people, local philanthropies, local businesses, local food and the local economy, with a promise to preserve the authenticity of our mountain home through genuine food and signature hospitality.

Biltmore Culinary Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2013 by the Biltmore Company.  It is awarded to students enrolled in the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management programs.

Daniel Dragonetti Memorial Scholarship for Culinary Arts

This scholarship was established in 2014 in memory of the late Daniel Dragonetti, a former A-B Tech culinary student.  It is awarded to students enrolled in the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management programs.

Heirloom Hospitality Group Culinary Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2012 and is provided to a first year female student (age 20-36) enrolled in the Culinary Arts program. Heirloom Hospitality Group is a family owned business located in Asheville, NC, which owns and operates Cúrate Bar de Tapas and The Nightbell.  Candidates will be interviewed by Curate owners and will work an unpaid 8-hour "stagiaire" at Curate for final selection. Recipient may be considered for a summer internship at an Heirloom Hospitality food service establishment (between first and second year).

Joseph Bell-Powell Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Joelen Bell in memory of her son Joseph Bell-Powell, a culinary student at A-B Tech who passed away in 2003.  It is awarded to deserving students enrolled in the Culinary Technology program.

Laurey Masterton "Don't Postpone Joy" Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2014 in memory of Laurey Masterton, former owner of Laurey's Catering.  This scholarship is provided to students enrolled in the Culinary Arts program.

McKibbon “Spirit to Serve” Culinary Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2013 by John McKibbon, Chairman of McKibbon Hotel Management, Inc.  It is awarded to students enrolled in the Hotel and Restaurant Management program.   The scholarship recipients will also meet with "Aloft" Hotel general manager for one full work day to learn all that is part of the position at Aloft.

Morgan Virginia Kirtland Webster Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2012 by Patricia Freeman and Ralph Webster in memory of their daughter, Morgan Webster. It is awarded to deserving students enrolled in the Baking and Pastry Arts program.

Sgro-Huston Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Joe and Beverly Sgro in memory of Fred and Tullia and James C. Huston.  It is awarded to deserving students enrolled in the Baking and Pastry program.

The Grove Park Inn Endowed Culinary Technical Program Scholarship honoring Elaine D. Sammons

This scholarship was established in ….. It is awarded to students enrolled in the Culinary Arts program. Elaine Sammons was the wife of Charles Sammons, who bought the historical Grove Park Inn in 1955. In the early 1980s Elaine Sammons encouraged her husband to undertake a historical restoration to preserve the property’s heritage. With her extensive hospitality background, she agreed to oversee the $20 million restoration.  After Mr. Sammons’ death in 1988, Mrs. Sammons dedicated herself to preserving the heritage of the historic hotel. The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa served as Mrs. Sammons’ summer home for several years before her death in 2009.

Walnut Cove Members Association Culinary Scholarship

This scholarship was established by members of the Walnut Cove Members Association (WCMA), a local  501(c)(3) organization. The association is dedicated to raising funds for local needy and deserving organizations in the community.  This scholarship is awarded to deserving students enrolled in the Culinary Arts program.



Dental Hygiene/Assisting

Irma and Edward Sadler Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship provides assistance to students enrolled in the Dental Hygiene program.

Worth B. Gregory, Jr. Scholarship

Established in 2012 in honor of Dr. Worth B. Gregory, Jr. DDS.  This scholarship is provided to students enrolled in the Dental program at A-B Tech.



Emergency Services

Capt. Jeff Bowen Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Capt. Jeff Bowen, a 13-year veteran of the Asheville Fire Department, who gave his life in the service of others while searching for victims in a local building fire in 2011. This scholarship is awarded to students who are volunteers and/or active firefighters enrolled in the Fire Protection Technology program.

David and Helen Edwards Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2013 by the children, family and friends of David and Helen Edwards.  It is awarded to students enrolled in any Emergency Services program (i.e. Criminal Justice Technology, Emergency Medical Science and Fire Protection Technology).

Johnathan Giardina Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established in 2004 by Nick and Deborah Giardina. It was established in memory of their son Johnathan Giardina (1970-2003), a former A-B Tech student enrolled in the Emergency Management Science (EMS) program.  It is awarded to two students enrolled in the Emergency Management Science (EMS) program (one first year EMS student and renewable to a second year student).  Johnathan started his studies at A-B Tech in 1999.   He was also a member of the Buncombe County Rescue Squad, where he served as captain of the EMS division.

Sgt. Jeffrey Hewitt Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established in 2006 by friends and family of Sgt. Jeffrey Hewitt in his memory.  It is awarded to students enrolled in the Criminal Justice Technology, Emergency Medical Science (EMS) or Fire Protection Technology programs.  Sgt. Hewitt served with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office for 11 years. He was shot and killed in the line of duty while serving papers at a local residence.

Engineering and Applied Technology

Advanced Superabrasives/John Batki Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2014 by Advanced Superabrasives, Inc. in memory of John Batki.  It is awarded to students pursuing an Associate in Applied Science degree in any Engineering and Applied Technology program.

ArvinMeritor, Electrical, Electronics, and Machining Scholarship

This scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to deserving students in the Electrical/Electronics Technology and/or Machining Technology programs.

Engineering and Applied Science Scholarship

This scholarship is provided to students enrolled in any Engineering and Applied Science program.

Joseph Dave Engineering Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Joseph Dave (founder of Dave Steel Company – January 7, 1929) by his son, Jerry Dave.  It is awarded to students enrolled in any Engineering and Applied Technology program.  Preference will be given to students enrolled in the Civil Engineering Technology program. Dave Steel Company is a structural steel fabrication company with the main office located in Asheville, NC.

Marie Love Cochrane Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship provides financial assistance to second-year students pursuing a curriculum program with a concentration in math or Mechanical, Electronic, Computer Engineering Associate of Applied Science programs.

This scholarship is provided to deserving students enrolled in the Electrical/Electronics program at A-B Tech.

This scholarship was established in 2013.  The scholarship is available to students enrolled in the Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) Technology program.

Pete and Flo Palmeri Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2010 in memory of Pete and Flo Palmeri, by their son, Dr. Russ Palmeri (A-B Tech Biology instructor). Pete was an HVAC technician, electrician and business owner. This scholarship is awarded to students pursuing a degree in HVAC or Electrical/Electronics Technology.

Pride in Technical Education Scholarship

This scholarship is provided to first-year students, ages 18 to 28 years of age, enrolled in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Systems Technology, and Electrical/Electronics Technology.

Progress Energy Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship will be provided for the student pursuing an Associate Degree in Math, Science, or Engineering.

Richard and Jean Benfield Scholarship

Established in 2012 by Richard and Jean Benfield, this scholarship is provided for students in any Engineering and Applied Technology program. Richard is retired from business; Jean was born and raised in Buncombe County and author of the book Mountain Born. The Benfield’s come from families of carpenters, manufacturers, and machinists. The scholarship was established to help students enter the Engineering and Applied Technology programs and graduate with satisfying, practical skills.

The Conrad Family Scholaship

This scholarship was established in 2014 by Bernhard Conrad, owner of Conrad Industries.  It is awarded to students enrolled in an Engineering and Applied Technology program. The Conrad Industries also owns  AB Emblem, the leading international designer and manufacturer of embroidered patches for over six decades.

AB Emblem is a world-wide provider of embroidered patches with a focus on exceptional customer service and quality craftsmanship. AB Emblem supplies custom patches to some of the most recognized organizations in the world; their customers include NASA, the US Military and Boy Scouts of America. The company has built a reputation for consistently providing exceptional craftsmanship with both standard and custom patches.

The Frances N. Johnson Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Frances N. Johnson, former A-B Tech Registrar.  This scholarship is available to students who are interested in pursuing a degree in Engineering or vocational studies.

Entrepreneurship

Sandra and Jones Byrd Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2012 by Sandra and Jones Byrd, long-time community supporters.  It is awarded to students with a 3.0 GPA enrolled in the Entrepreneurship program.

The Asheville SCORE Nevin Rodes Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2012 in honor of  Nevin "Dusty" Rodes by members of Asheville SCORE. It is awarded to students enrolled in the A-B Tech Student Incubator program.  Mr. Rodes is a former Asheville SCORE volunteer where he also served as mentor to numerous business owners in the community. Asheville SCORE is a local organization that provides free information and advice to local business owners.



Female Specific

Altrusa International of Asheville Scholarship

This scholarship was established by members of the Altrusa International of Asheville Association.  It is awarded to second year females enrolled in a curriculum program. Altrusa International, Inc. is a global volunteer organization whose purpose is to promote better communities through service.

GEM Fund, American Association of University Women, Asheville Branch Scholarship

The GEM Fund (Gaining Educational Momentum) was established by members of the Asheville branch of the American Association of University Women.  It is awarded to second year female students in good academic standing in the college transfer program.

The Asheville branch of AAUW traces its history from 1915 when sixteen local women college graduates organized what would locally become AAUW Asheville.  Its work in Asheville has been ongoing and influential in the community, nation, and world, assisting women through such related projects as refugee relief and improvement of public schools. AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.

Never Too Old for School Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Tom and Nancy Maher. It is available to non-traditional female students 30 years of age or older.

Roberta Manley Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2008 by Kay Manley, in memory of her mother Roberta Manley. This scholarship is open to all female students aged 40 years of age or older with life experiences and barriers to obtaining an education.

The Womansong New Start Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2009 by members of Womansong of Asheville, Inc, and Asheville’s largest and oldest women’s chorus. This scholarship is awarded to female students aged 25 and over. Since 1988, Womansong has helped women in transition make a new start in their lives.

Women in STEM

This scholarship was established in 2014.  It is awarded to female students enrolled in any science, technology, engineering or math program.



GED®

College Bridge Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a first year student in Fall semester and  renewable to second year recipient who has completed the A-B Tech GED program.  The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial support in helping students transition from the GED program into a two-year curriculum program.



General Allied Health Scholarships

Health and Public Service Scholarship

This scholarship was established by staff and faculty of the Allied Health division. It is awarded to students enrolled in any Allied Health or Public Service program.

Jack and Carolyn Ferguson Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established by Jack and Carolyn Ferguson. It is awarded to students enrolled in the Nursing Degree program or Allied Health programs. Jack and Carolyn have been long-time friends of the college and have donated and supported A-B Tech for more than a decade.  He retired from Lowe’s and serves on the College Foundation’s Board of Directors. Their generous giving has not only transformed the College, but our community.

Jan and Lary Schulhof Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Dr. Lary and Jan Schulhof.  It is awarded to a student enrolled in any Allied Health curriculum program.   Dr. Schulhof practiced Neurosurgery in Asheville from 1975 - 2009. He is a member of the A-B Tech Foundation Board of Directors where in the past, he served as Chairman. Mrs. Schulhof is serving or has served on several civic Boards as well, including the Asheville Art Museum,  the French Broad River Garden Club Foundation, the Vetust Study Club, and the Carolina's Dahlia's Society.

Robert F. Burgin Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2006, in honor of Robert F. Burgin's work at Mission Hospitals on the occasion of his retirement.  It is awarded to students enrolled in any Allied Health program.

This scholarship was established by Tom and Nancy Maher in 2012.  It is available to students enrolled in any Allied Health program.



General Scholarships

A-B Tech Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in any two-year curriculum program with a 3.0 gpa or above.

Adelaide Key Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established by Adelaide Key, community advocate and philanthropist. It is awarded to students enrolled in any curriculum program.

Alice D. Hamling Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2013 by members of the Hamling family (The Alice D. Hamling Foundation, Inc.)  in honor of Alice D. Hamling (1908-1982) whose interest in promoting education of young men and women was of the utmost importance to her. This scholarship is provided to first-year students enrolled in either the A.A. or A.S. College Transfer program planning to transfer to a 4-year university upon graduating from A-B Tech. Students must also be employed and participate in Service-Learning at Habitat for Humanity each semester.

This scholarship is awarded to a deserving students enrolled in any curriculum program.

AvL Technologies Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established by Jim Oliver, founder of AvL.  It is awarded to students enrolled in any curriculum program.  AvL Technologies was formed in 1994 to design and manufacture a lightweight positioner for the ERA Technology 1.5M diamond-shaped, Ku band, carbon fiber reflector for BAF Communications.  AvL produces visionary, innovative, reproducible products for emerging markets that combine elegant designs, unique style and technical superiority for ultimate performance.

Back in the Saddle Scholarship

This scholarship is provided to a deserving student who is re-enrolling at A-B Tech after a period of time. Recipient will be required to meet with assigned academic advisor at the mid-point of the semester and also one week prior to final exams/end of the semester and submit confirmation to the scholarship advisor.

Children's Welfare League Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established in 2001.  It is offered to CWL participants enrolled in any curriculum program.  The Children’s Welfare League promotes the education and welfare of children of Buncombe County.

D. Bruce and Joyce Goforth Scholarship

Established in 2010, this scholarship is available to students enrolled in any curriculum program.

Debby Harmon Invitational Education Scholarship

This scholarship is available to students enrolled in any curriculum program. 

Don and Marjorie Locke Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Dr. Don and Marjorie Locke.  It is awarded to students enrolled in any curriculum program.  Dr. Locke is the  Distinguished Professor Emeritus at NC State University and retired Director of Diversity and Multiculturalism at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He is the author/co-author of more than 125 publications, with a focus on multicultural issues.  He is also a member of the A-B Tech Board of Trustees.  Both he and Mrs. Locke are long-time advocates and supporters of education and continue to support students throughout the community. Mrs. Locke is also active in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Delta House, the YWCA, and Emmanual Lutheran Church.

Dr. Joe Roberson Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Joe Roberson,  a prominent local family dentist for over 45 years. It is provided to students in any curriculum program. Dr. Roberson served on the A-B Tech Board of Trustees for more than 35 years and was instrumental in the establishment of the school's Dental Hygiene Program.

Edna and C. J. DeLoach Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2012 by Jean and Douglas Haldane in memory of Jean's parents Edna and C. J. DeLoach.  This scholarship is available to first-year students enrolled in any curriculum program. Edna and C. J. DeLoach were educators in the North Carolina Piedmont. C. J. taught Vocational Agriculture in high schools for 36 years, and Edna taught in Elementary School for about 20 years.  They were each well-respected by their community and their students, and often became friends and mentors of former students.

This scholarship is provided to students enrolled in any two-year curriculum program.

Grace Joan Love Schneider Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by a bequest from the estate of Grace Joan Love Schneider.  It provides support to deserving students enrolled in any curriculum program.

I Didn't Know I Qualify Scholarship

This scholarship is designed for students from middle income families who do not qualify for student financial aid (FAFSA).  Recipients will be required to meet with an assigned academic advisor at the mid-point of the semester and also one week prior to final exams/end of the semester; submit confirmation of meeting to scholarship advisor.

John Bernhardt Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is provided to students enrolled in any two-year curriculum program.

K. Ray Bailey Endowment for Student Success Scholarship

This scholarship was created in honor of K. Ray Bailey, former President of A-B Tech.   It is awarded to students enrolled in any curriculum program. President Bailey retired in 2007 after serving 41 years of devoted service at the College. He holds the record as A-B Tech's longest-serving employee.  He started work as the Director of Adult Basic Education in 1966 and held numerous positions before becoming President in 1990.

K. Ray Bailey/AB Tech Foundation Golf Classic Scholarship

This scholarship was created in honor of K. Ray Bailey, former President of A-B Tech.  It is awarded to students enrolled in any curriculum program. President Bailey retired in 2007 after serving 41 years of service at the College He holds the record as A-B Tech's longest-serving employee, starting work as the Director of Adult Basic Education in 1966 and held numerous positions before becoming President in 1990.

Lowe's Buchan Club Scholarship

This scholarship was established through the generosity of several Lowe’s retirees in 2008. The Lowe's Buchan Club was formed in 1976 by retired workers of Lowe's.  The purpose of this scholarship is to give back and create advanced educational opportunities for students enrolled in any curriculum program at A-B Tech.

Mary Louise Carpenter Scholarship

This scholarship was established by friends and faculty of A-B Tech in honor of Mary Louise Carpenter.  This scholarship provides support to students enrolled in any curriculum program. Ms. Carpenter was a dedicated counselor at A-B Tech for 24 years before becoming Director of Counseling in 1993 a position she held until she retired in 1997.

Michael Patrick Metcalf Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Michael Patrick Metcalf.  It is awarded to a student identified as having a disability as determined by the protocol established by the College.

Otis A. Vaughn Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was established in 2013 by Heather Vaughn, in memory of her father Otis A. Vaughn.  Mr. Vaughn was a six generation Floridian.  He was also  a U. S. Army veteran of Vietnam.  After moving to Asheville, Mr. Vaughn worked at APAC Carolina where he eventually became president of the company.  Because he was never given an opportunity to attend college, he made it his mission to encourage and financially support others. He believed in actions and deeds rather than words. He also helped hundreds of people start businesses, go back to school and find their life's path.  This scholarship will continue his legacy.

This scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in any curriculum.

Sarah R. Gnilka Memorial Biology Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2013 by the A-B Tech Biology Department staff.  It is awarded to students enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science degree program.

Smith-Maag Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to students between the age of 17 and 22 who have aged out of foster care or children of the College's employees.

State Employees' Credit Union Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship is provided to students that best exemplify the membership philosophy of credit unions, "People Helping People" and has demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement.

The Sam Palmeri Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was created by Dr. Russ Palmeri (A-B Tech Biology instructor)  in memory of his uncle Sam Palmeri, whose dream was to become a doctor. Although the Second World War cut short his plans.  After the War, he worked as a pharmacy apprentice and eventually bought the business where he was employed (Zuck & Eaton Surgical Supplies, Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals). Wells Fargo Project New Futures Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2011.  It is awarded to students enrolled in any curriculum program who are unemployed or displaced due to a recent layoff or workforce reduction. Students will benefit from a network of relationships and support necessary for successful completion of a postsecondary degree and/or training.

Winkenwerder Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2008 by John and Cindy Winkenwerder.  It is awarded to students enrolled in any curriculum program.  Mr. Winkenwerder serves on the College Foundation’s Board of Directors.



High School

A-B Tech AEOP Ray Bailey Endowed Scholarship

The A-B Tech AEOP Ray Bailey Endowed Scholarship was established in by the A-B Tech Association of Education Office Professionals (AEOP). It is awarded to graduating high school seniors with confirmation of acceptance in a post-high school program.

In 2003, the association began the efforts to endow the scholarship and in May 2007, the A-B Tech AEOP announced the endowment of the scholarship and the naming of the scholarship for former president K. Ray Bailey.

The purpose of the Association was to raise money and grant scholarships and to improve the quality of service provided for students, educators and the community.

Bowers, Ellis & Watson Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established in 2006 by John Ellis, member of the College Foundation’s Board of Directors. It is available to students between the ages of 18 and 23 who are not considered for Federal FA because they must consider the income of their parents.



Hominy Valley Resident

Hutchinson/Candler Lions Club Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Candler Lions Club, a local civic organization dedicated to helping the community and those in need.

Jessie Copp Kramer/Hominy Valley Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of a respected educator, Jessie Copp Kramer, who taught in schools in Hominy Valley for many years.  She also influenced many generations of young people in the community and like A-B Tech helped students realize their dreams.

William P. Warren Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established to honor the work of Ray Cope, CEO of the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust Fund in Winston -Salem.  The scholarship, as requested by Mr. Cope, is named for William P. Warren, a Hominy Valley educator, who mentored Mr. Cope. It is awarded to students enrolled in any Allied Health program.



Hospitality Management

Corman Family Scholarship

Established in 2014, this scholarship is available to students enrolled in the Brewing, Distillation and Fermentation program.

Hulsing Hotels Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2013 by Dennis Hulsing, President and CEO of Hulsing Enterprises, LLC.  It is awarded to students enrolled in the Hospitality Management program at A-B Tech with preference given to students with learning disabilities.  Hulsing Hotels, Inc. is the owner of the Crowne Plaza Resort and Four Points by Sheraton Asheville.

Joe and Janice Brumit Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established by Joe and Janice Brumit.  It is awarded to students enrolled in the Hospitality Management program. Joe and Janice are long-time friends of the College.  Mr. Brumit is president of Brumit Development Company. He is also past Board Chair of A-B Tech College Foundation Board of Directors and is currently the Chair of the A-B Tech Board of Trustees. Mrs. Brumit is also a dedicated civic leader.  Her service to the community includes serving as Chair of the UNC-Asheville Board of Trustees.  She also continues to work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of children.

McKibbon “Spirit to Serve” HRM Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2013 by John McKibbon, Chairman of McKibbon Hotel Management, Inc.  It is awarded to students enrolled in the Hotel and Restaurant Management program.   The scholarship recipients will also meet with "Aloft" Hotel general manager for one full work day to learn all that is part of the position at Aloft.

The Grove Park Inn Endowed Hospitality Technical Program Scholarship honoring Elaine D. Sammons

This scholarship was established in ….. It is awarded to students enrolled in the Hospitality Management program. Elaine Sammons was the wife of Charles Sammons, who bought the historical Grove Park Inn in 1955. In the early 1980s Elaine Sammons encouraged her husband to undertake a historical restoration to preserve the property’s heritage. With her extensive hospitality background, she agreed to oversee the $20 million restoration.  After Mr. Sammons’ death in 1988, Mrs. Sammons dedicated herself to preserving the heritage of the historic hotel. The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa served as Mrs. Sammons’ summer home for several years before her death in 2009.

Human Resource Development (HRD)

Mary Hay Gwynn Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established in memory of Mary Hay Gwynn in 2002.  It is awarded to a current or past Human Resource Development (HRD) student who wishes to pursue additional skills training.  Mary Hay Gwynn worked at A-B Tech Community College for  16 years as an educator and administrator. She served as Director of the Human Resources Development Program from 1991 to 2001.

Owen Tilson Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship offered to Madison County residents only who are enrolled in a curriculum program.

Rotary Club of Madison County - Irv Washington Scholarship

This scholarship was created in 2013 in memory of Irv Washington a dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Madison County.  It is provided to Madison County Residents.

Preference will be given to first-year students who have overcome adversity, financial, academic or otherwise to successfully complete high school.



Medical Laboratory Technology

Grimes-West Medical Laboratory Technology Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established to honor Pat Grimes and Laura West, who were Med Tech instructors. After a valiant fight with cancer, Laura West passed away in 2006.  This scholarship is awarded to a second year student enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Technology program.



Minority

100 Men and Women Minority Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2012 by Samuel Abdul-Allah and many community volunteers who wanted to provide educational opportunities for African-American students enrolled in any curriculum program.

Asheville Latin Americans for Advancement Society Merit Scholarship

Established in 2012 by members of the Asheville Latin Americans For Advancement Society (ALAS), this scholarship is awarded to Latino residents of Western North Carolina paying out of state tuition at A-B Tech.

Hazel Fox Minority Student Entrepreneurship Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Dr. Joseph Fox (Business Administration Department Chair) in memory of his mother, Mrs. Hazel B. Fox. It is awarded to a deserving African-American student enrolled in the Entrepreneurship program. Education was very important to Hazel Fox.  Although she was unable to attend college herself, she always stressed the importance of a good education. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage students to become job creators instead of job takers.

Lacy T. Haith and James V. Miller Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was established in memory of two African-American pioneers, Lacy T. Haith (Educator) and James V. Miller (Master Mason).  It is awarded to deserving African-American students enrolled in any curriculum program. Mr. Haith came to Asheville to teach in 1937. He taught carpentry and other vocational skills at Stephens-Lee High School. He also taught his students the value of a good education. Mr. Miller is noted for constructing many of Asheville’s graceful churches, public buildings, and homes that remain today. He worked for some of the top contractors before starting his company, Miller & Sons Construction, specializing in churches and commercial buildings. Both Haith and Miller were very influential figures in the African-American community.

Lead the Way Scholarship for African American Men

This scholarship was created by Dr. Rock Doddridge.  It is available to African- American males enrolled in any curriculum program, while also fulfilling commitments to family, work and/or community.

Osborne M. Hart Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Osborne M. Hart.  It is awarded to  African-American students who have been accepted into a curriculum program at A-B Tech and who are enrolled as full-time students.  Osborne Hart was a native of Asheville, President of Hart Funeral Services and a devoted community leader.  A retired Lt. Colonel, he was also a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

Shapiro-Green Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Hal and Clare Shapiro.  It is awarded to African-American and Latino students enrolled in any curriculum program.  Preference is given to Asheville High School graduates.



Nursing

Etheridge Women's Club Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a second year female student enrolled in the Associate of Nursing Degree program.  Etheridge Women’s Club is a local registered 501(c)(4) organization located in Asheville, NC and is focused in gifts, grants, or loans to other organizations.

H. D. and Kay Crews Endowed Scholarship

The H. D. and Kay Crews Scholarship was established by Dr. H. Dennison and Kay Crews. It is awarded to  deserving students pursuing a degree in the Associate Degree Nursing Program.

Theresa Sabo Memorial Endowed Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2005 in memory of Theresa Sabo by her children and sisters and brother. It is awarded to second-year students enrolled with a 3.0 GPA in the Nursing 



Pharmacy Technology

Pharmacy Technology Fellowship Award

This scholarship is provided to first and second year students enrolled in the Pharmacy Technology program.



Radiography

Iva McGrady Wall Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Established in 2005, in memory of Iva Wall, an employee at Mission Hospitals. Ms. Wall was instrumental in moving the Radiography program from Mission to A-B Tech in the early 70's. She also managed the Radiography department and retired from A-B Tech in 1995. The scholarship is awarded to second year Radiography students.  If there is no second year students, the scholarship shall be awarded to a first year Radiography student; or a  Medical Sonography student.



Single Parent

Lavender Fund Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2008 by an anonymous donor whose purpose was to provide an opportunity for single parents to succeed in achieving their educational goals. It is awarded to single parents pursuing a two-year degree, certificate program or diploma. This program also connects students to resources that can help assist any need.

Veteran

AT&T-North Carolina Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2009.  It is awarded to Veteran students who have been honorably discharged enrolled in any curriculum program.

This scholarship is awarded to students who served in the U.S. Armed Forces in any of the competitive Allied Health Programs, EMS or Fire Protection.



Veterinary Technology

The Glenda Bailey Veterinary Technology Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established by K. Ray and Glenda Bailey. It is awarded to second year students with a 3.0 GPA enrolled in the Veterinary Medical Technology Program.  K. Ray and Glenda have been supporters of A-B Tech for more than a decade. He retired as President from A-B Tech in 2007 after serving 41 years of service at the College.  He holds the record as A-B Tech's longest-serving employee, starting work as the Director of Adult Basic Education in 1966 and held numerous positions before becoming President in 1990.

This scholarship was established in 2007 by the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. It is awarded to second year students with a 3.0 GPA in the Veterinary Technology program.
