About Stella

“Walls turned sideways are bridges.”-Angela Davis

Stella has had to find a way to dismantle many walls in her lifetime:

  •  Dropping out of school in sixth grade
  •  Getting married at the age of thirteen
  •  Becoming the mother of five children
  •  Living with her mother’s addiction
  •  Overcoming cervical cancer
  •  Overcoming an abusive marriage

These obstacles became the bridge to her future…

  • Becoming the first in her family to ever get a GED
  • Being the first person in her family who will graduate from college

Stella will be graduating in May with her Associate of Applied Science degree in General Occupational Technology; she has earned a certificate in Substance Abuse Studies at A-B Tech.  Over the next year, she will continue pursuit of an Associate of Arts, which she will complete upon earning twenty-one credit hours. Stella plans to continue her education, and to become a Communications instructor in the North Carolina Community College System.

She is a strong advocate for community involvement, believing everyone has something to give back to the community, even if that something is not yet realized. One of her community endeavors has been helping a local equine rescue by working with NC ‘Stangs, a Mustang club, to organize and plan an annual car show that she has helped host for four years. In the last two years, this organization has raised over $3000 to help abused and neglected horses.  She is an avid Mustang and foosball enthusiast. Stella strives to be a scholarly servant-leader, and she believes the key to successfully doing so is remembering to have fun.
