Abstracting the Figure

Draw and paint the human figure from various live models. Learn different techniques to train your eye, and become a better observer. Focus on portraits and full body images. Create various compositions by pulling shapes from the forms you see, allowing yourself to let go of what it is 'supposed to look like.' Study the colors of flesh and explore other unique worlds of color. Look to the past for inspiration from cave art to cubism, and other abstract painting. Botanical Relief Prints New

This class will begin with drawing local plant life out of doors. The focus will be on close observation and depiction of botanical structures and details. Expressive use of line and balanced composition will be addressed. Next, drawings will be transferred to printing plates and carved with cutting tools. Prints will be inked and hand-printed in quantity editions for exchanging with other class members, making into greeting cards or other presentations, and creating a quilt-like botanical collage that will incorporate the prints of each class member. Collaged Objects

Nature's Notebook: Drawing in Pen and Ink

You will learn to illustrate the intricacies of a flower or capture the delicate essence of a fern frond tuning your powers of observation. By drawing and writing in your diary or sketchbook, you will learn more than any camera ever taught. Using the local landscape for inspiration, you will draw flowers, leaves, mosses and lichen. This class is appropriate for the beginning student as well as the accomplished artist. Materials needed for the course include a small sketching book (like Moleskine); an inexpensive spiral-bound sketchbook; a small, but inexpensive, set of watercolors; a few sketching pencils; a sketching pen (Rotring ArtPens are excellent); and a sketch-pad no larger than 12 x 16. Pigment Exploration

Learn about today's artists' paint color choices. Explore the world of color through tons of mixing exercises. Create a reference journal of all your combinations with notes. Build your intuition of pigment use through experience. Discuss color theory. Share paint to gain a broader understanding without buying every tube. Traditional Basketry New

Functional baskets, mostly of Appalachian/Ozarks style, will be the focus of this class. Plaited, ribbed, and wickerwork techniques will be taught. Participants will learn how to gather and prepare indigenous basket making plants such as willow, honeysuckle and coralberry runners, and to make natural dyes for coloring weaving materials.
