Decorative Restoration Program

Decorative RestorationStudents in the Decorative Painting Techniques & Restoration Program train in all aspects of surface treatments and decoration. The content of the program deals with traditional, as well as modern materials suitable for both restoration and new decoration of surfaces. Students learn the physical and chemical nature of building materials, the preparation of old and new surfaces, a variety of paint application methods along with techniques such as stenciling, gilding, ornamental plaster repair, marbling, graining, wall glazing and paperhanging. Throughout the year potential career paths are discussed and introduced through field trips and class speakers, as the field is wide and diverse.

The program is grounded in the fundamentals of painting and decorating while encouraging the development of individual styles and techniques. Students learn in a studio and classroom setting augmented with off site practical projects at local historic properties.

The Foundation Level stresses the development of good work habits while introducing students to tools and equipment, color theory, safety, materials, calculations and surface preparation. Modern and traditional materials and processes are covered to give an understanding and appreciation of the historical evolution of the trade. As students develop sound straight painting practices, basic techniques of decorative painting are taught. Studio and off site projects allow students to apply their knowledge and gain practical experience. Students qualify for the Advanced Level through a competency exam at the end of the Foundation Level and through completion of practical assignments.

The Advanced Level covers architectural design styles, mold making and casting, ornamental plaster repair and gilding as well as more complex decorative techniques, allowing for the development of individual style.
