NA I (NURSING ASSISTANT I)

Course Description:

Short-term training that prepares individuals to work as caregivers in a health care setting such as a nursing home, hospital or home health care.

Students will attend a mandatory orientation for 15 hours prior to beginning the Nursing Assistant class.

  • 146 Hours of instruction - 90 classroom hours and 46 clinical hours
    Taught by a Registered Nurse
    Approved by the North Carolina Division of Facility Services

Prerequisites:

To be successful in an NA class students must read at a ninth grade level or above.  Assessment to determine your reading ability level is part of orientation.

If you test below the ninth grade level and wish to improve your reading ability, free classes are available through the Adult Basic Skills program. 

Registration: Students must register in person for NA I classes

  1. Bring with you the negative results of a tuberculosis (TB) skin test (Make a photocopy of your test results.). This test is available at a doctor’s office or a County Health Department (for a charge of $15.00).
  2. Make sure you have a picture ID such as a driver’s license. Make a legible photocopy of your ID.
  3. Make sure you have a United States Social Security Card issued by the Social Security Administration. This must be the actual card, not a photocopy. If you do not have your original card, you can apply for a duplicate at the Social Security Administration Office which is located off Chunns Cove Road in the Center Park Office Complex on Piney Mountain Road. The name on your picture ID and the social security card must match.
  4. Tuition: $66.30- Payment Options:
  • Students should bring in correct and exact cash of $66.30
  • Write a check to A-B Tech for $66.30
  • Bring a written authorization for payment from your organizational sponsor or the employer who will pay for your class
  1. If you are 16 or 17, download and complete an A-B Tech Minor Permission Form.  You must bring the completed form with you when you register.
  2. Finally, bring all the requested items listed above (photocopies and originals) in person only, 1st Tuesday of each month: 1:00 PM - 6:00  PM to the Pines Building, Room 228.  No fax or online registration is available for NA I classes.

Schedule of classes - You may choose between the following two options:

Day Classes (6 Weeks):

Monday through Friday
Classroom hours: 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM
Clinical hours: 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Evening Classes (4.5 Months):

Two evenings per week - (Monday and Wednesday or Tuesdays and Thursday)
Classroom hours: 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Clinical hours: 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM - (7 Saturdays)
