| ACT
- American College Test The American College Test measures your preparedness for college in academic areas such as math, English, and science. It is recommended you take the test in your junior year so that you may retake it, if needed, during your senior year. Accuplacer This is a test taken by students who are enrolled in a vocational education program who have completed four vocational classes in a specific pathway. Accuplacer is an on-line test that is administered at the local high school. Results of the test can be used at AB-Tech to satisfy admission requirements. Students who take and pass the Accuplacer have up to three years to use their scores for admission to AB Tech. Afternoon College Afternoon College is a special program for qualified high school students from Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools, and Madison County Schools that allows students an opportunity to earn both high school and college credit. Afternoon College courses are tuition free, but students are required to purchase texts and materials. Classes are offered on the AB Tech campus during the high schools’ 3rd and 4th period blocks. These are rigorous college classes. They follow the AB Tech calendar and schedule, use college textbooks, course syllabi, and grading policy. Although a majority of Afternoon College students attend high school, a number of classes are open to the registration of college students. Articulated Classes A Regional Articulation in Vocational Education (RAVE) agreement has been established with AB Tech and Blue Ridge Community College. This agreement allows students who enroll in certain vocational education classes in high school, to receive college credit at one of the schools mentioned above. Students must obtain a B in the high school class, obtain a raw score of 80 or higher on the VOCATS assessment, complete the application procedure and notify the college of this accomplishment. Many articulated classes are also included in the State Wide Community College Articulation Agreement. Associate’s Degree A two-year degree offered by colleges and universities. ASVAB - Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery This test is given to students to measure their academic skills and occupational competencies. This test is required for students who want to go into the military. However, all students are encouraged to take this form of an assessment because it gives such a clear picture of their occupational abilities. Bachelor’s Degree A four-year degree offered by colleges and universities. Career Education Center The Career Education Center provides a unique educational experience for high school students. Students have the option of a half-day or full-day schedule and retain all home school privileges such as participation in sports, pep rallies, and any extra curricular activities. The vocational classes offered are very specialized and demand numerous hours of hands-on activities. Academic classes are offered to allow students to remain at the CEC full-time if they desire. (This is only available in Buncombe County.) College Placement Test - CPT This is a test that students take for admission to A-B Tech. This test can be taken during regular hours on the A-B Tech campus. Accuplacer and Pass test scores less than three years old are also accepted. Dual Enrollment Classes AB Tech and other area colleges partner with Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools, and Madison County Schools to offer college level courses. Qualified high school students enroll with their college counterparts in the regular courses offered on the college campuses. Dual enrollment at AB Tech is tuition free, but students are required to purchase texts and materials. Dual enrollment at other participating colleges may require payment of tuition and the purchase of textbooks and materials. FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid You must complete this form to apply for federal financial aid. GPA - Grade Point Average An average of the grades you earn while in high school. Huskins Bill Classes Through what’s known as “the Huskins Bill,” AB Tech offers career technical and college transfer classes to qualified high school juniors and seniors. Huskins classes are offered on the high school campuses, on the AB Tech campuses (Afternoon College), and through Distance Learning/ITV. Classes are tuition free and students earn both high school and college credit. These are rigorous college courses set up specifically for high school students. SAT - Scholastic Aptitude Test This is a test that measures your verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities. It is recommended that you take this test your junior year so that you have time during your senior year to take it again. You will need to take this test if you are going to college. Work Based Learning Apprenticeships, internships, and cooperative education all provide work-based learning opportunities for high school students. Students receive high school credit for the program provided they meet the specified requirements. back |
